Let's go back... Way back.... :D

People always ask me why the heck did I pick geckos, why didn't I want something furry.. I wanna know why you decided to get your first? And I want to know about your first! Because I'm going to assume that this was the one that started it all.

Why did you choose to get/purchase/adopt a leopard gecko?

And a couple quick questions bout your first!

1. Who was it?
2. Male or Female?
3. Did you know the morph?
4. Do you still have her or him?
5. How old: would they be/or are they?
6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another!

Thanks for taking the time! :main_thumbsup:

We had went to a reptile show to get me a beardie and my husband saw a "going out of buisness sale", lol. We ended up with Leo aka grandpa ( male). He was a a whopping $15.00. He is a high yellow. We didn't bother to even ask how old he was at the time but I got ahold of the breeder later and he was 9 so he is 12 now! Once we got him home we had to do a frantic search on how to take care of him. The thing is that no one told us then that they are ADDICTIVE. He has such a cuite personality that we had to add to the collection.

1. Who was it? Leapy (Yeah, I know, I was a kid). She was a present from my uncle, one of the first leo breeders, tho not anyone big or famous.
2. Male or Female? Female
3. Did you know the morph? WT
4. Do you still have her or him? No. :(
5. How old: would they be/or are they? 15~ (Died at ~10)
6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another! She was awesome, we were best buds. I'd had her since I could remember, practically, and couldn't imagine life gecko-less. Plus I was working at a zoo where they were breeding some and he gave me Eclipse (my avatar pic) and her brother for free.

Well I've always loved reptiles, my dad used to get me turtles, snakes, anoles, etc. Then we just had our cats for a few years... It wasn't until a friend and I were walking to a local pet store (thats closed now, sadly) to get food for her snake that I started thinking about getting back into reptiles. Looked around at a couple different species and decided leopard geckos seemed simple enough to get me back into the swing of things, plus I thought they were so adorable.

And a couple quick questions bout your first!

1. Who was it?
I got a baby that didn't make it :(

2. Male or Female?
Not sure

3. Did you know the morph?
Probably a high yellow

4. Do you still have her or him?
No

5. How old: would they be/or are they?
Almost a year old

6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another!
He/she was so small and so cute and when he/she died I was really sad. I decided I'd wait a couple of months before trying to start over. Then in November I went to get the two I have now. Mikko was the first one I decided to get, I loved his coloring. Dante I picked out second, becaus he was nice and big and extremely active. They're both doing great and growing fast :)

I've kept various reptiles and/or amphibians for as far back as I can remember. I first got bitten by the LG bug when a friend of mine bought two in the early 90s sometime. Prior to that it was the Constrictors that got to me. The first Leopard Geckos I owned myself were a pair of Diablo Blancos, an Albino Emerine male, and the Albino Super Snow male in my avatar (I jumped in with both feet). I still have them all. They are all in the year and a half range somewhere. The thing that keeps me interested is the variety of morphs that have popped up in the last 15 years or so. I am hopelessly addicted.

Rachel, you sure are GREAT at starting new threads, LOL.. everything you start is always very interesting :D

Why did you choose to get/purchase/adopt a leopard gecko?
I remember going to ***** one day, but I can't remember why I was there because I didn't have any pets besides the family dog. I was 17, going on 18. Perhaps I was just killing time, but I was looking at all of their reptiles when I came across the leopard gecko. I fell in love instantly, and with my 18th birthday coming up, I decided I'd use my birthday money to buy everything I needed.

1. Who was it?
Her name was Bojangles.. yup, yup, "the original Bo" ;)

2. Male or Female?
Female. I remember I had always wished I had a male.

3. Did you know the morph?
Yes, well, kind of. I knew she was albino! But at the time, the only types of leos that I knew of were albino and normal (I didn't know there were three strains of albino, or anything like that).

4. Do you still have her or him?
No. Ms. Bojangles died due to a very unfortunate cat attack in 2007. I had her for 5 years.. when she passed, I held her in my hands and cried my eyes out. It was her death that actually inspired us to get a breeding pair.. and well, here we are now with 14 breeding geckos :)

5. How old: would they be/or are they?
She would be 7 years old by now :cry2:

6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another!
The heartbreak.. I wanted more to fill the void.

a couple quick questions bout your first!

1. Who was it? A mean 'lil tremper albino from a major chain pet store
2. Male or Female? Female
3. Did you know the morph? Yeah - tremper albino
4. Do you still have her or him? Sadly, no, she resides with my cousin in Nevada
5. How old: would they be/or are they? She would be approx 3 years old this year
6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another! Their smiley faces, their cat-like characteristics, just overall appearance and demeanor.

What started me on getting a leopard gecko in the first place? Well, back in my first year of college I had a pet green anole in my dorm. It lived about 2 years (died the starting of my junior year). Anole's are a lot of work for their size and I wanted to upgrade to a reptile that was easier to care for and didn't require a sunlight cycle...so leopard geckos fit that perfectly and I went ahead and purchased one. I've been loving them ever since!

I was working in a pet store and I really didn't know too much about reptiles in general. As I learned more about them, I was drawn to the leos. They are just so cute and easy to care for. We went to our first reptile looking to get one possibly two and walked out with three!

1. Who was it? Sophia, Big Momma and Amelia (who turned into Amelio)
2. Male or Female? Was supposed to be 3 females, but ended up 1.2
3. Did you know the morph? Bell Hybino, SHT, High Yellow
4. Do you still have her or him? Still have all three
5. How old: would they be/or are they? They are about 2 years old
6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another! They are just so fun to watch and simply adorable. Plus they are always smiling!

I'd had a LG when I was younger, and I remembered that it was super chill. My dad took care of it most of the time, so I didn't bond with it too much. Then a friend and I went to a reptile show to just "look around" he had gotten a snake not too much earlier, and I was wanting a reptile, especially a leo, real bad. So I got Slim at the show. :)

1. Who was it? Her name is Slim. :)

2. Male or Female? Female

3. Did you know the morph? Uh huh. Tangerine

4. Do you still have her or him? You bet.

5. How old: would they be/or are they? 6 months?!

6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another! Oh geeze. Everything about her. She's beautiful, and smart, and cute. I got Smiley, also a tangerine, from Nick at Lecko My Gecko a few months after getting Slim. And about two weeks ago, got Blazer, from a chain store. I'm absolutely addicted. When Blaze and the girls are bigger they will be put together to breed. I can not wait.

Great thread Rachel!

It was mine and my ex-boyfriends anniversary, I think it was our one year, and lets see... I love animals.. I would live in a zoo if I could. :) Sooooo instead of going out and buying me something lovey dovey.. he bought me a leopard gecko! Yes.. from ***** too.. :) The person we were talking to told us they were awesome, they were the ones that licked their eyeballs.. that didn't sell us, but we decided we wanted one.

1. Who was it? Lea, or Leabee

2. Male or Female? Female

3. Did you know the morph?High yellow

4. Do you still have her or him?Yes I do even after all the stuff we did to her too! I feel so horrible. :(

5. How old: would they be/or are they? 3 years I think..

6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another! Honestly.. I don't even know... ha.. I wanted to get her a buddy.. so I got Bella from a reptile show.. And then it was all down hill from there. :sweetheart:

OOoh this is fun... anyway, I'm a big animal person and reptiles interested me a lot even tho I never grew up with them. Anyway I started work at a fish pet store after high school, which was next to a regular pet store (with birds, furry animals, reptiles). I ended up getting a snake from them. (this is going somewhere I promise) Anyway the guy I worked with owned and bred leopard geckos, and that got me interested in the gecko. (plus I had a little crush on him haha, shameless I know) When I moved for school I later learn of a reptile expo in town. So I decide to go, just to check out the geckos. mind you just to look :main_rolleyes: I end up walking away with a very tiny high yellow gecko hatchling. :main_laugh:

1. Who was it? Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky V but I just call him Ed or Edward for the most part

2. Male or Female? Male

3. Did you know the morph? Turns out he was a little too spotty to be a high yellow, so just a normal

4. Do you still have her or him? Yup!

5. How old: would they be/or are they? He's 4 now (wow I've had him for 4 years now, crazy)

6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another! Well, their personality, they are easy to care for, don't eat mice...:main_lipsrsealed: and they are too flipping cute :D

1. Who was it?
Tiamat.

2. Male or Female?

Female.

3. Did you know the morph?

High Yellow, I do believe.

4. Do you still have her or him?

Yup.

5. How old: would they be/or are they?
I'm not entirely sure. I suspect she was about four to five months when I got her so I guess that makes her 8 or 9 months. (Leaning more towards 9 at the moment as she's ovulating and I know they start doing that around 9 or 10 months.)

6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another!
I got Tiamat because I wanted something different. I was working in a petstore at the time, in the reptile section, and quickly realize how neat they were. My REAL first leo was Fafnir. He was just a baby when I got him, but he died about two weeks after I brought him home. Tiamat however is more or less my official first because I've grown more attached to her. I just think leos are so pretty and their personalities so cute. I especially like the hypo-tangs so I wanted to get another one and I'm glad I did. Mandarin has been a little dream. Tiamat is still very sweet as well but I have trouble feeding her so she makes me worry a lot.

We went to a reptile shop to look around, and we saw lots of leopard geckos in transparent display boxes under a spot light. We felt bad for them as the size of the boxes were so small that barely allow them to turn around. So we left the shop. After I went home, I kept thinking about the leos, their color, their skin texture, their face; I know I really wanted one; so after 1 or 2 days, we went to another reptile shop and purchased my first geckos. :)

1. Who was it?
Bubu and Whitie.

2. Male or Female?
Bubu is male; Whitie is female.

3. Did you know the morph?
Bubu is Hi-yellow; and Whitie is albino (didn't know there are different strains at that time).

4. Do you still have her or him?
Yes!

5. How old: would they be/or are they?
They are both 7 years old now.

6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another!
They were both very small when I got them, around 10-15g, and I kept them in the same tank. I bought a piece of driftwood for them, and they both like to sleep under it. The sight of them sleeping together and then basking together makes me want to get more. And so I did, within 2 months, I filled all my available tabletops with glass tanks and got 3 more geckos. :p

My son brought home a vivarium 6 years ago that he had made in a class. It came with a newt. THere were no care instructions and I couldn't find anything online (probably didn't really know how to look back then). I kept it going for 9 months, mostly by digging earthworms for it (that was real fun in November) and starting a whiteworm culture for it. Finally it died, probably because it wasn't being supplemented properly. I thought about getting a reptile to replace it, but didn't do anything about it for a year. One day I went into one of those big name pet stores and saw a bunch of care sheets for different reptiles. I took one of each and eliminated the care sheets that required large enclosures or specialized things like misting systems. When I got done I only had 1 caresheet left and it was for leopard geckos. I asked to see them and I got hooked and decided to get "just one".

1. Who was it? "Specko" the gecko

2. Male or Female? Female, even though the guy at the pet store originally told me it was male

3. Did you know the morph? high yellow

4. Do you still have her or him? No, she had intermittent problems for the year that I had her including impaction (before I learned not to have her on sand), parasites, and occasional periods where she wouldn't eat. She managed to get out of the cage and was missing for 4 days. When I found her, the tip of her tail was crushed and she eventually just failed and died.

5. How old: would they be/or are they? She would have been about 5

6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another!
I had actually already gotten another about 6 months after I got her, and I still have her. There's something that has always attracted me about slow moving scaly critters.

Beacuse I always wanted a reptile, i'd always caught lots of reptiles like turtles and stuff but my mom found a way to release them but make it look like they escaped on their own, i owned tadpoles and frogs, and toads. and I wanted a girl something and I saw I had enough money for my first paycheck to get something so I did :)
I LOVE dragons and mythical things and I guess this is as close as I come to these thing :) and the fact they lived a long time, i don't know to loose things, plus my mom wanted nothing furry. these stay contained in there own cage :)

1. Who was it? Zynx
2. Male or Female? female
3. Did you know the morph? at the time, no all I knew was it was an albino
4. Do you still have her or him? yup :)
5. How old: would they be/or are they? 13 months!
6. Name one quality, if this is the one that started it all, that made you choose to get another! the uber cuteness and addicctiveness of them, the easy care, their longevity, the sheer pleasure of buying something lol *bad me*
