The only bad thing about SS Patternless is they look very similar to SS Blizzards. It's going to be confusing once there's a lot of them on the market. For example Shelly from www.lizardlair.net hatched a SS ''Blizzard'' from Macks she didn't know were hets and she has been trying to prove him out. Although she bred him to a RWPA and got no Patternless, but got Patternless when bred back to his mother so he's at least a het. The only part about it that boggels my mind is that she didn't get any Blizzards when he was bred back to his mom. Bad odds I suppose. Shelly, are you out there?

Yes...I know Shelly and I've talk with her about this problem..

But we also got black eye blizzards, not ss, just to make things more confusing...

Well at birth a blac eyed blizzard and a ssbliz are verdifferent thus those 2 would not be as much of a problem. BUt sspatternless and ssbliz there is the problem of the year...lol

Yea...it's not too hard to pick out ss as hatchlings ;). It's harder when they are adult!
but I got my groups sepatate and the eggs will be in delicups 2 and 2, well marked with info!

-I don't recommend to mix sspatternless with ssblizzards...:main_laugh:

I can only agree that every breeder has his own association about the "Perfect" Mack Snow. Personally, I just love the yellow-lavender Macks -some of them are so stunning:D !

Quote: "Too bad there isn't a breed standard with geckos like there is with dogs."

Well, I have been breeding on fish-standarts for a long time (I joined the guppie breeders club when I was just a child, so it must be at least 8 years^^), but I have to say that this becomes very boring with time!
Although it is necessary for cats and dogs, I don't think it is very usefull for Gecko-breeders for several reasons:

At first it constricts you, because a standart is not just limited to health! If a standart would be only based on healthy (f.ex. no overbites or degenerations of the skeletton), it would be fine! But if you want to "survive" in standart breeding, you have to "create" what other people like -with no consideration if you like that or not:main_lipsrsealed: .
The "standart" of some dog-morphs like the boxer is the best example:The judges prefer the short noses for years now, other "old typed" boxer have few chances to get good notes, and to breed. This selection leads to breath-problems-and not enough: In an article of a dog journal I read that this "short-nose" lines, which are now mostly used for breeding, carry in some cases (of course not all!) psycal instability, which means that there are mutch more nervous and agressive boxers than 10 years before..(which makes me very sad because I love boxers!)
So the second argument against it is that you need to be very careful, because a standart always limits your genepool, and does not always good!!

Beside that I made the experience that with time EVERY standart becomes more and more detailled, and at last you have not many options left: You breed ONE type of snow, One Tangerine, ONE hypo, etc.

This Is not the way I want to go. I enjoy the endless faces the leopardgecko has, I don't want to wedge him in "one way a leopard gecko has to look".
I want to have the possibilty to create my own morphs, and not have to breed what others say: f.ex. I was once very intersting in breeding standart mice, but when I asked the members of the board about new morphs, they told me that there would be no need for new morphs: " I think we have already enough morphs" :main_no:
Who has the right to forbid all others to breed new morphs?? I can't see any use in that..

So, to finish my thread, I would say that a kind of "warrant of apprehension" would be fine to help beginners:main_thumbsup: . This could be a kind of "standart" for breeding age, size, approximal weight, a description of a correct outer appearance and behaviour. This "Standart" should be on a voluntary basis, but there could be given a kind of "seal of approval" for those who follow this basic breeding rules..

Serious Breeder will always know how to select their lines, and there will always be some who don't care- with or without a standart..

Mutch greetings to you all and sorry for the long text^^
