I just bought my gecko a new 20l tank. I was planning on using paper towel as substrate, but it kept on slipping and won't fit. Now, my gecko is in a small container I can't keep him in for very long, and no substrate in the new tank or the old. What can I use as a temporary or permnent substrate that lets the heat from the pad throu?

Can you not cut the towels to fit the tank? Or are they too small? If so, just layer them enough to fit the tank.

They are too small, and if I use a thick enough layer that the friction prevents them from slipping, the heat from the pad won't get through.

You could go get yourself a package of cage carpet...and with a 20 long, you need to get the size that says 29 gallon on it. That's the one that fits perfectly. If you buy two 10 gallon sizes, they'll end up being too small. And plus, in the meantime while you're trying to decide weather you want to use it permanently, it's washable. :)

I put 3-4 layers of paper towels on the bottom, heat pad still gets through, but not as hot as before. The branch is still slipping, though, and I don't think the towels are going to get any more secure. If no one has any new ideas, though, i think it would work for a couple days until i get a proper repti-carpet that fits.

Had to go scavenging for hides... Fond some, gecko seems more curious than I have ever seen him before. Had to see which hide he liked better, the humid or the hot, on opposite sides of the tank. Didn't make the decorations too high, so he wouldn't get out.

do you mean the towels themselves are slipping or the things you put on top of them? if it is the towels themselves, a little double sided tape will work wonders.

I have to say I am strongly against using tape for any reptlie. I've seen what it has done to snakes and since then I am against it. But what about tile. I found one tile, 12x24 that they will cut down to what ever i need. And they look great!

As soon as our little guy is settled, out goes the repti-bark and in goes the tile!:)
