The UTH sticks to the bottom of the tank.

The temp "should" maintain itself. There are thermostats you can purchase to regulate this.

The humid hide doesn't need to be any different from the style of the other hide so long as you keep it moist. A bunch of paper towels that are damp will do the trick & aid your leo in a healthy shed.

Since you're going for your first, you might want to check out magnetic rocks. They have 2 chambers inside the rock. The cavern section goes inside the tank & the 2nd half of the rock sticks to the outside of the glass using super magnets. If you stuff some Eco-earth in the top chamber & wet it, this makes a great humid hide. Not to mention it's cool to be able to take the rock face off & see your leo inside. Go for the large size. Use caution with the magnets which can & will take a chunk out of your skin.

Yes, you can buy lids at the pet store. Measure your tank before you go to save yourself a 2nd trip.

ok, so you plug it in, then it automatically heats up. Cool, so if i get a heat mat i put it on the warm side of the tank,, then i put a humid hide on the cool side. and the col side has no heating?

how much do the thermostats cost? so i guess when you plug the UTH in it automatically starts heating up. and how do attach the thermostat to the heat pad. and also, whats the difference between a herpstat and a thermostat?

I don't have a thermostats. I just have the UTH. Their temps stay at bay, right where they are supposed to stay. None of my leos are dead yet... :p

For my heat mats I went to Lowes and bought a dimmer that you plug lamps and things into plugged my heat mat into it and used a infrared thermomater to keep a check on temps adjusting the dimmer till I got my day temp right and marked the dimmer with a black mark then got my night time temps where I want them and marked it with red I still check the temps a couple times a day with my infrared therm and also have a digital with a probe on the bottom at all times.I do use a white light (low watt) during the day to simulate daytime and a red one at night I have 4 tanks set up this way and no problems with them I turn the light on in morning and they go to there hides and sleep when I turn it off at night and the red on they are all out ready to eat within a few min.

ive decided how i am going to design my tank for my leopard gecko, on the cool side, where there is no heating i am going to use a granite tile. is that okay or is it too smooth?

i would go with one with not such a smooth surface because the gecko wont be able to grip on as well
so i would say granite is to smooth
