I'm not sure what to do. HELP!

I got my second leo today. Now they're mating (I know that it takes almost 7 females and 1 male to breed, but I read that sometimes this can happen). This is my first time, so I have some questions first.

How do you incubate the eggs?

How long does it take to the female lay the eggs?

Can I sell them to pet stores? (I don't care if I don't get any money for them).

Should the male be separated while laying the eggs?

Were can I get cheap tanks for the eggs?

I assume that the geckos that are mating are your first gecko and the one that you had the picture of in your other thread. The new one looks very young. Are you sure they are mating? For the moment I will leave it to someone else, or your search in the forums or on the internet (or in a good basic book about leopard geckos) to answer your questions. It's usually a good idea to have answers to these questions before your geckos mate (and, as I posted in the other thread to quarantine a new gecko for at least amonth). If your female is less than a year old and/or less than 50 grams I recommend that you separate them and hope that the mating didn't work (all it takes is 1 male and 1 female). If the mating worked, you are asking good questions. See what you can find out and we'll try to help you with the rest.

ummm. it prolly wasnt best to put your male and female together.. you only need 1 feamle and 1 male..hopefully you have enough money, space and time. and you need to do a lot more research.
1.) with an incubator..and medium. search it on this site.or on google(lots of info)
2.)2-5 weeks
3.) you can if they will buy (probably not the best place to sell it though if you care about your leos)
4.) I would seperate your male right now
5.)get tubs (target,walmart)

i don't know where you hear that 1 male 7 females thing but i wouldnt take any advice from them.

lol, i don't think its fair that your leos breed and you didnt even plan it and mine won't breed and i've been trying to get them to for 3 months almost.

good luck

I do not recommend allowing your geckos to breed if you haven't done the research involved with incubating, housing, caring for, feeding, and selling the offspring.

Thanks,
My male and female are always together, don't answer me like "reptiles don't have feelings" right now they're just buddies. But when they're older they might start to mate, that's why I need to know these things.

Type-o
Were can I find cheap tanks?

Cross that off, the pet store has little cages called "Kritter Keepers".

How do you incubate the eggs? You can buy a Hovabator from the Randall Burkey Company

How long does it take to the female lay the eggs? Once she has successfully mated, she can lay eggs anywhere from 2-6 weeks later.

Can I sell them to pet stores? You would have to look around and ask. Try family owned business, too. We went to a local business and asked them if we could give them our leos (if we couldn't sell them), and they said they would take them for trade.

Should the male be separated while laying the eggs? It's up to you. If you feel that the male is irritating the females, then separate him. We watch our leos carefully, and the male doesn't seem to bother any of the females, so we keep him in there with them. If we did notice any problems, we would separate him immediately.

Were can I get cheap tanks for the eggs? Tanks for eggs? Or do you mean hatchlings? Hatchlings should be kept in plastic shoeboxes, and they should be kept seperately. It's not expensive to house them (all you need is some paper towels, some milk jug caps for water and calcium powder, and some hides - you can use old mealworm containers), but you will need to be able to heat the containers as well..

I suggest buying a book on Leopard Geckos or using the search button to answer your 1, 2 & 4 questions. There is a lot that goes into breeding and by having a book on hand to answer your questions it will make it a lot easier on you. Use the search button to find the answers to your other questions, it's all been discussed before.

P.S. Calm down, you are being very deffensive. You first typed that your geckos were breeding, then you came back with they are not breeding now but will later. You have to be very careful with what you type, things can be misinterpreted very easily.

P.S.S. I would suggest quarantining the new leo as well. Nice pick up by the way. :main_thumbsup:

espacially when typing, because 90% of communication is non-verbal (tone, stance, expressions). you've got to be clear.

IMO!! You have no reason to be breeding if you have to ask these questions, yes i needed help also at times, but did much of the researcg myself. How old are these geckos and what is their weight so we can better help you out? I am not attacking you just we need mor einfo to help you out.

Kritter Keepers CANNOT be used for hatchlings. That kind of plastic is not meant to be heated and as you should know, Leopard geckos need under tank heaters. You'll be better off buying a rack to keep them all in. We use racks from www.reptilebasics.com

Do lots of searching through all of the topics in this forum and you should find all of the answers you need. If you have specific questions you can also utilize the search function at the top of the page.

It only takes one time.

Right. All females are different, and we only have four, but three of them laid eggs after just one copulation. The fourth one isn't breeding yet. You still have (at the very least) two weeks to learn as much as you can before she could possibly lay any eggs.

I have a caresheet on my webpage that covers everything except for diseases, because I don't know much about them.

Actually, according to what I've read the smallest UTH's, Zoomed made for 1-5 gallons are rated OK for plastic. I have, on occasion, used those small ones (with a thermostat) under the largest kritter keepers. I have also taped heat cable to a piece of plexiglass and set the kritter keeper on top of it (with proper ventilation underneath and a thermostat). It's confusing about the 1-5 gallon UTH's because in one place zoomed says these are OK for plastic and then when you get them it has the same insert that it has with the bigger ones that says not to use with plastic. Go figure.

Separate them. They never should have been placed together anyway. You should have quarantined the new gecko. Also, it's highly recommended not to house geckos of different sizes together. Do you know 100% that the new gecko is a female? It looked rather young in the other thread. Remember it only takes once; Breeding too early can cause health problems for hte female, so like everyone else, I'd say separate them and do a little more research.

You may think they're buddies, but they are just animals, and they'll breed if possible, even if it's not healthy to do so at the age and weights that they are at. It's like breeding a female dog just becuase she went into heat at 9 months old; doesn't mean it's healthy and doesn't mean it should be allowed.

You can just purchase another aquarium for hte new gecko. I wouldn't do the Kritter Keeper thing for leopard geckos, not even hatchlings. If you have babies, which I really hope you don't, you can either purchase more aquariums (1 per gecko) or a rack system with sterlite tubs.

Aliza, I'm glad you were able to make it work but they are not intended for use with heating elements. I used to work for a pet supply distributer and I've accepted LOTS of returns on failed UTHs and heard plenty of horror stories about them melting Kritter Keepers. Your average person, especially one who is young and new to keeping herps might not know how to safely set up something like you did.

Ok, I won't use kritter keepers, even if acpart is right. Just to be safe. And thanks for the link.
