Is it mouth rot??

Just a thought... if this gecko's primary diet is crickets and roaches, it isn't unheard of to have a leg part get stuck in the mouth or throat which can cause pain and abscess. Those insect legs are covered with tiny 'barbs' that only point one way, which drives it deeper into the tissues (similar to a foxtail). Hopefully the vet will be able to get a good look inside the mouth and rule this out.

I never even heard of that happening! I'm going to ask him about that when I make the appt. Hopefully we can figure out what's going on with her. If not, we'll be going to a new vet. :/

Yes, this has happened to one of my geckos, and another person I know had the same thing, only the insect part traveled up behind the gecko's sinus and eye creating a horrible abscess that eventually reached it's brain. It may sound far-fetched, but make sure your vet is aware of this potential issue. Check out this photo of a cricket leg:

Lilith that was not me. I just told someone recently to use the slurry if you look below. I think the op's name was Kas.

I believe I saw a post here that the chitin of a beetle got stuck in the geckos mouth. let me see if I can find it.

I can't find it. There are so many posts and some are in the wrong sections. It was definately a mealworm bettle piece stuck like between the teeth.

OMG!! That's horrible!! Yeah, I'm definitely going to talk to him about that when we go. I knew their legs had those things on 'em, but I never knew that it could cause such a bad problem if they got stuck! That's insane!!

I'll just come out and ask you point blank: are you the person from PA that was banned? I notice you are using an proxy each time you log on, which hides your location and true ip address. Be honest!

You are a LIAR! :main_yes:

You did vote that you would never consider using the slurry. In fact, you voted the same way on that poll FIVE different times with your FIVE different accounts.

To those of you who think this person is trying to be helpful by giving advice (which I highly doubt he/she has the experience or qualifications to give), I'm hoping you will now understand that this person is a troll and is NOT A TRUTH TELLER. He/she is not trying to help, he/she is trying to cause problems here.

**I did edit the slurry poll and deleted those 5 votes**

Brooke, I am so sorry your thread got hijacked by a known troll on this website. My slurry recipe is designed for geckos that are convalescing while under treatment for an illness by a qualified vet. I know there are times when it's difficult to find a good vet, and hope you can get some help for your gecko.

Thanks!! I hope I can too. I called them today and she just told me that she didn't know when Dr. Nelson (herp vet) was going to be back in, so I have to call tomorrow to make an appt. :/

Now im not too experinced so ill toss out a few ideas based of what i do learn about animals. My first question has to be how her breathing is? Sometimes the rot in the mouth can indicate/cause a respitory infection, ive only seen it it a boa before though so again, me no telegent. Also, im going to have to agree with GGG, i have seen what happens when a animal gets food stuck in its mouth, our steer did with some grain, it can rot right through the mouth. So i would have it checked out by that better vet as its very important. Best of luck to you and the leo.

I called the vet again today (2nd friggin' day in a row!) to make her appt. They took my name and number and told me that a tech would call me back. Never got a phone call. I'm trying to get her in b/c the vet from Birmingham (the better vet) comes down here to help with overflow (I'm assuming) and he is going to be here this week so I want him to check her out this time. She still hasn't eaten anything. I think she may have eaten about 2 crickets since her vet appt. And that's after she was given something to stimulate her appetite!! We checked her again today to keep a close eye on her situation and the black places are still there and my hubby said that when he checked her it looked as though the inside of her mouth was whiter. :( So, yea. I'm calling that vet's office tomorrow to cuss them out and let them know that I do not appreciate being ignored and that I want to see that B-ham vet ASAP! .... >.<
