Is there anyway to prevent dropping a tail

I have not purchased xmas gifts. No we don't have much to sell because we don't own much. that is how we like it. SHE is in her own tank. She just wasn't when the fight happened. They had been happily sharing a tank for several years.
The tail is completely healed. There just appears to be a bump now that might grow into a tail. I didn't have to come and update my thread. I did. I didn't expect it to go where it has gone. That is ok. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
I honestly don't see what the point it taking her to the vet now would be. That is I guess maybe what I was asking. There isn't a wound. There isn't an infection.
Like I said.. in the past we have taken them to the vet.

When we buy gifts.. we spend a minimal amount on them. usually it is a pair of pj's.. per kid.... seriously.

Ok let me ask you guys a question? I have a dog with heartworms. We opted to use preventative medication vs. heartworm treatment. Because of this am I a bad pet owner because I chose the cheaper of the two treatments?

Prevention is always the best medicine. A 5 dollar pill a month to prevent heartworm is better than the $500 treatment to fix it.
Expecially with heartworm as the cure is very difficult on the dog, and some dogs die.

If these geckos were just kept apart, the injury would have been prevented. WAITING is always going to cost you more in the end.

No, a bad pet owner would be all over the forums saying their dog is throwing up and losing weight and would try to diagnose and fix the problem using at-home remedies rather than taking it to the vet for a proper diagnosis and vet-prescribed medication because they claim they can't afford the vet.

I don't think you're really understanding the issue, or at least, the issue that's getting people fired up. No one's being faulted for trying to utilize a more cost-efficient treatment. And personally, I have nothing against the OP choosing to wait and see what happens with the Leo rather than take it to the vet if they're not concerned about its current tail situation. The issue comes down to - if the OP (or anyone for that matter) is concerned about the health of their animal, as they were in the beginning, and the suggestion, based on the symptoms, is to take it to the vet, saying you won't or can't take it because you can't afford a simple checkup is a problem. You can't use that excuse when you choose to take on the responsibility for the life of an animal. If you ever get in a life situation where you can't afford a simple vet visit, then it is your responsibility as a pet owner to find a way to get the money, or find someone to take on the animal themselves. What about children? You can't say "hey, I'm not taking my sick kid to the doctor because I can't afford it" - you work your butt off trying to come up with the money to do so, whatever that entails. While animals are not people, it doesn't mean they're not important, and that you are not responsible for giving them the care and life they deserve.

When she was losing and weight and very sick...she went to the vet. I wasn't concerned about her dropping her tail and prevented it getting affected.

The two that had been in the tank together had never fought before. My dd decided to feed them and she was inexperienced enough with those two (they are her brother's, not hers) to know to separate them as she fed them. It was definitely a learning experience for her. They are now separated.

What I am saying is that at the time we found out jack had heartworms we didn't have money to treat him because I was going through a divorce and bankruptcy. So I opted for the preventative pills to keep the worms from getting bigger. Most people would think I was a piece of poo for that. Well couldn't afford the full treatment. Jack will be going through treatment this next week but its been nearly a year. Like I said sometimes life stuff gets in the way of proper care and you have to do the best with what's given to you and people's experiences can help especially with a minor injury like this. I get what y'all are saying. I really do but sometimes you need to cut people some slack now and again when weighing in everything and the particular situation. This is just my personal opinion. I have been keeping reptiles for about 15 years now and had LOADS of leopard geckos and other reptiles so I'm speaking from experience not just throwing out info I have read on the Internet or something I've never in my life been through.

I have been on the same bandwagon as you before but I changed my views to some extent (I cut some slack now where I used to not). I've been though too much the last year to judge anyone heh.

Be cool guys at this point lets agree to disagree . We are beating a dead horse :)

And my point is that if you would have just put him on prevention, he would have never caught heartworm to begin with, saving you hundreds of dollars. I dont think youre terrible, but I dont think youre the most responsible.
Poor thing. Heartworm treatments are like chemo therapy. Hope he makes it.

While it's unfortunate a Leo had to become injured in order to learn from the experience, at least they're separated now, and hopefully it'll be something you consider for the future before housing Leos together again. Some people have successfully maintained Leo pairs without issue, but many have not. They're just not social creatures and don't really do well with sharing their space with others. To be safe, it's generally best to keep all Leos in separate enclosures.

Keep an eye on your Leo, and if it gets any worse, please figure out a way to get it treatment. And for the future, it really is imperative that you are able to take any of your animals to the vet when needed. Try setting money aside every week or month, keep a list of items you can sell if needed, or even consider a way of making additional income through a hobby or part-time job. Don't solely count on your job to necessarily provide the finances you need. Even those can be lost through layoffs and the like. Plan ahead; that way, when life throws you a curve ball again, your animals aren't neglected in the process.

For the record, I'm not being naive; I've been doing all three of the things I just suggested as I've been through a divorce in the past and nearly bankrupt as well. I know what it's like to be living on your very last dollar and trying to get by. But I'd never be able to forgive myself if any of my pets died because I got into a situation where I couldn't care for them and didn't do everything in my power to provide for them.

He was on prevention, we took him off for the winter. We didn't think they could get it in the winter but apparently we have Mosquitos during the cold months.

We were being responsible however were not educated on using preventative during the winter

Its completely off topic and inappropriate, but if your dog caught heartworm in the winter, you would have a false negative when you tested him in the spring.

Back to the OP and the main discussion.
I hope your gecko is all right. I understand about money issues and how vet bills are always hard to stomach. My dog just had a $400 vet bill to repair a stick wound. I have a baby on the way AND just bought a new house. That $400 was hard to let go of, but I couldnt let my dog sit with a gaping wound.
