I have one leo and i breed my meal worms for a couple reasons. First you save money and dont have to keep buying them. Second if you every have too many you can sell them to make some money. Third the more meal worms you have the more you can feed your gecko. Plus you can use them as fishing bait as well.

I've also got a single SHTCT--I buy 50 mealies at a time, keep half in the fridge. I primarily feed crickets. I get a price break at 50/$4but the mortality rate and stink are pretty bad. Its nice to have a supply of mealworms to suppliment the diet, but I would think breeding would be a pain...

I feed them to my leopard gecko as a staple with crickets once in a while to mix it up, and i do the opposite with For my tokay. Breeding is easy just time consuming. Just buy a Gross amount and put into a large container with 2" substrate... and they do the rest. i put in a small piece of lettuce on paper towel every once in a while for the beetles to eat, they love it.

Also, mealworms make a great addition to bird feeders if you like attracting shizz loads of birds into your yard. But the problem is they allways eat them too quickly lol.

Thanks guys, i need more votes though. My dad is being hard headed and i said i cant keep paying $5 bucks for 100. He keeps replying, " go online and ask the people that breed their own how many leopard geckos they feed". I keep telling him that doesnt matter!!! :( And if i have too many my brother or sister could get a leopard gecko because i have a 20 gal, but id prefer to sell them :), or i could give them to my friend down the street who has a skink. I have alot of options if i have excess.

Nope... I have one leo and I breed roaches and going to experiment with supers, which means I need more geckos, lol. I might sound a little much but I rather have more than be short at anyone time and I know where my feeders are coming from and what they're being feed so I know they're healthy and doing well. Plus there's always a need for feeders so if you have to many its going to be pretty easy to get rid of them. Keeping me leo healthier and happier. Plus it's not cost to me because I refuse to pay $2.50 for 50 half dead mealworms!

Breeding takes up little room, saves money, and requires little effort. Just cleaning and providing moisture. Plus you can better monitor how well they are gut-loaded. I say go for it! I only have two leos and I breed mealies for them. :)

Tell your dad that it saves alot of money if you breed them your self. I would suggest is he does let you breed going to the classifieds and buying one of the meal worm breeding kits, it will save you alot of money cause really all you will have to do is wait for the babies to grow and then you can feed instead of going through the entire life cycle.

Will do. He thinks people only breed them because they have like 20 leo's. I hope he lets me after all of you guys having 1 or two. And so far i have 4 yes and 16 no. Lets see what he says to that

I don't know what could convince a parent more than that it saves money. Is he just iffy about having a thousand insects in your room?

Sometimes I think my parents groan about me getting another weird animal because they just don't want me to have such a weird hobby. :p

No hes fine with mealworms. He keeps telling me to show him how to breed them, i say i have a caresheet on how to do it. he keeps saying that it could be a *donkey* online trying to give false information. I dont know why someone would do that with such a random thing as mealworms. When he gets home im definately showing him all your guys replies so that he will hopefully let me start my own colony.

OH AND I FORGOT HOW MANY MEALWORMS SHOULD I START OFF WITH FOR 1 LEOPARD GECKO??

I'd say at least 500-1000 mealies to start with. When you first get them they probably won't be matured enough to pupate. You will need enough to keep your gecko fed during the time it takes for them to become beetles, mate, and for the new mealies to get to feeder size.

I don't know why there would be false information about something as random as mealworm breeding either. lol
It's a proven practice. People do it to feed pets, attract blue birds, and they are even part of biology classes to demonstrate metamorphasis! I think I appreciate the mealworms as much as my geckos... *facepalm*

No, not stupid at all. The mealworms or other feeders bred by the owner will quarantee quality!

p.s. Have you consider breeding supers? Breeding supers seem to be easier than breeding mealworms for me. I just started breeding supers with only 4 beetles and I have plenty of baby worms already!

I dont even want to breed mealies, for one I dont even feed them, I do super worms. AND, soon I will have only 2 leos, & I still dont wanna breed them. I think its a waste, & I really dont have the time nor the patience for it...

You breed supers or you buy them?
