Miracle Grow Perlite

My current dilemma.. The only perlite I can find locally has Miracle Grow plant food in it..

Could this be detrimental to the eggs?

Probably a dumb question, but just thought I'd ask before I make the 1 hour trip to somewhere that might have it without plant food.

Yes. The chemicals and additives can most definitely harm your eggs. Your better off buying Straight Perlite or Pre-Moistened Perlite(HatchRite)

Lena, you could probably find it online with cheap shipping. I mean, it weighs nothing so I doubt that shipping would kill you!

Ok well now I feel stupid,I bought that same perilite not thinking it had something bad in it.I guess I should have asked,guess I killed all of my eggs since they have been in there for a month now,now I feel stupid that's about a dozen eggs down the drain probally.

No that stuff is ok. I used it last year with no problems. Only lost a few eggs that were no good to start with. It has no harmful chemicals and my babies are growing like weeds. No mutations or health issues.

The place that sells that, Should have other perilite or vermiculite that has nothing added to it for those that grow organic. If not ask the manager to order it. Just because its not on the shelf doesn't mean they can't get it.:main_thumbsup:

I have the same stuff. I used it last year with Ball Python eggs and had no problems.

I couldn't imagine it being healthy. Any chemicles is a bad thing. Imagine laying in that yourself for 3ish months.

If you don't have any experience incubating in this perlite, it's really not fair for you to be worrying these folks with your thoughts and speculations.

I used this stuff last season, simply because I couldn't find anything else in any of the garden centers I checked. I also didn't have ANY problems hatching ANY eggs with this perlite. What I would recommend, and I did this before I used it for incubation, is rinse very thoroughly and let it dry out in advance of getting your containers set up. That should be all you need.

Has anyone used this on a long term basis besides just last year, that can give an opinion on whether or not this can have any long term affect on there reptiles that were incubated in it. My thery is this: if eggs absorb moister then how can it be safe for them to absorb chemicals? just because there is success with hatching reptiles with this doesn't guarantee there not going to have problems later on, right?

I used it and my eggs died, I only tried it on one clutch so it might of just been infertile.

Well, I'm lucky I saw this thread. This is the only Perlite Lowe's had. My bag says nothing about chemicals or anything. It just says "A non-toxic, sterile, odorless material."

Maurice, you didn't have any problems with this? This will be my first time incubating eggs, and I don't want them dying.

I personaly don't know, my concern is that they add fertilizer to it and that didn't seem like something I would want to chance incubating eggs in.
For the record I can't read the label of the bag in the picture, Im going off of the bag of Perilite that was on the Miracle Grow website. They only listed one bag so I personaly don't know if they produce some with and without fertilizer. My nursery sold neither one.

I have adults (50-80 grams) that where incubated in it, with no problems. If it was harmful, I’d say by the time they where adults it would have either killed them, or have been cleared out of their system.
