In your original post U used the word cage mate meaning u were housing the two leos together ??.IMO there is no way that battle took seconds like u said.To me that is considerable damage to the tail and side of the leo. There is no way it took seconds like u said for that damage to happen. Its not like there were bite marks. He literally torn skin off her tail and sides. That took more than seconds to happen..I am really upset that the leo has to now suffer

i am even more upset by the fact that you seem to be implying that i had left her to suffer.
yes the male was her "cage mate" as he was placed in her cage that evening to forfill his duties as a breeder as he always dose. they have been breeding together for over two years and i have never had any probles.
she dose also have a few bite marks at the base end of her tail and neck, i just didnt take any pics of them.
and i can promise you the fight was meer seconds! i had literly left the room to pick up the trays of food ready to feed them, when all of a sudden there was realy loud crashing around and i ran back in to see wot all the noise was about!! once i had seen wot hed dun she was removed and i did an emergency clean up of the wounds. she was quarantined over night in a sterile box and taken to the vets first thing in the morning, of which was a bank holliday and had to be an emergency appointment costing me £205 and i missed work!
so how dare you say i make my animals suffer!!!

Roger, stop being so *bleeping* obtuse. She put the male in to mate with the female, NOT because she had a shortage of space or because she thought leopard geckos were lonely when they were housed individually. Injuries like this CAN happen very quickly. It sounds like the male had it in his mind to kill the female, and he went at her with the intensity usually reserved for grizzly bears.
Emma, I am so sorry for your female -- she has a long recovery ahead of her. But she is very lucky to have you as an owner. And thank goodness you were in the house to hear the attack! Otherwise this post would likely be in the pet memorial forum. :\

Roger, I think its possible for that extent of injury to happen very quickly, maybe not literally a few seconds, but a minute or two is plenty time for that to result. All it takes was a bite with full force then violently shake the head; skin and flesh will detach. The male will pursue the opponent again and again until either one died or someone stopped them. It's one of the risk of breeding, that's why I was soooo reluctant to keep my pair together unattended overnight before.

Sausage, is there any chance that the girl had another male's scent on her or in her enclosure? A few years back someone posted something similar where the male tried to kill the female as soon as they were put together. Turns out it was because the owner had put another male in her cage a few days prior but mating was unsuccessful, so she switched male. And the new male could pick up the previous male scent and mistaken her as the other male.

There are plenty of shoulda woulda couldas. Nothing can be done but learn from ones mistakes and I know plenty of people who leave breeders alone together for at least a couple days. This is not someone who does not care obviously the leo was taken to the vet so she did the best she could. This being one of her "fav" Leos I doubt she wanted anything or thought anything like that would happen. Sausage keep your head up faith and good thoughts can go a long way. Im sending good vibes for a speedy recovery!

Maybe I'm weird...I'm a lot better than I was, but I'm always scared my guys will drop their tails and your girl got her poor tail torn and she didn't even drop it.

I hope she makes a speedy recovery, and I'm glad you were responsible and took her to the vet! Amazing that breeding them for 2 years and they decide to do this.

From your original post to me it was not clear u put them together for breeding purposes.Since u made it clear that u were specifically putting them together to breed in a later post yes there wasnt much u could do.I am in no way implying u intentionally caused injury to your leo. From your post u used the word cage mate. That led me to believe it was a permanent housing situation. If it was done in abreeding situation than yes males do cause that kind of injury and there is not much to prevent an injury during breeding.it can happen.I was absolutely flabbergasted and stunned by the damage that was done.Hopefully your leo will recover.

of course I agree with u.I have also left my breeders alone for 4-5 days and when stuff like this happens its unfortunate but it does happen.I got the vibe that it was a permanent housing situation.Obviously sausage cares for the animal to do a vet visit.I feel bad for the leo

I am honestly still stunned. Like I said earlier in anything I have personally witnessed between me and people I know, plus all the research I have done over past few years I have never seen anything like that. I saw some horrible pics once of a poor leo that had been attacked and her tail (still intact) was covered in bites and deformed looking. I did not know a Leo could "skin" another like that. Its actually quite scary to me. Even if they had been tankmates that is beyond imagination. I feel horrible if it were one of mine I know Id be a wreck. Roger sorry if I came across too defensive. I just thought the situation was bad enough with out starting a blaming debate. Though it makes sense why you were defensive as well. (thinking they were housed together)

You said she now bites when giving meds, got me thinking I wonder what her temperment will be after she heals back up will she become aggressive now or will she revert back to being nice and sweet? Maybe someone can answer that, thats had a similar situation.

Sausage-Yes we can see that u care for your animals for the fact u took it to the vet. There are ppl who wouldnt even bothered.keep us updated on your leos progress.Hope she heals quick. Is there any way we can make your pic a sticky thread.I think it would be a good learning tool for everyone on how much damage a leo can do to another leo

Dougefresh had a point and it also makes me wonder if something so traumatic would alter their temparment or is it cause she is in pain. Im sure she does not feel good with wounds like that.

Many animals experiencing discomfort will be in a defensive mode, if they have the strength. Sick animals are often too weak to fight you when administering meds. Once she's feeling better, she will go back to her previous happy self :)
