Parvo-infested Petland

So my girlfriends sister bought a puppy from petland last week. I thought from the beginning it was a very bad idea because most petlands take awful care of their animals and they overprice all their dogs. Personally, my family has always rescued their dogs. Anyways the pup got sick yesterday and would barely move. The vet then confirmed she had parvo. When we get on the phone with petland they said they *forgot* to tell us that the pup had parvo and that a lot of the other pups there had it too. What kind of place can knowingly sell animals that have a sickness that usually results in death. Legal action may be taken and I will make a big effort to tear down the reputation of that particular store so no one buys another parvo-infested dog there. Poor pups, they are housed in cramped glass enclosures and have people tapping on the glass all day.

Yuck. Poor things.
Ive seen parvo first hand at the clinic I worked at - NOT FUN!

Everyone should boycott buying puppy mill dogs, this is a great example why.

And this is a new thing?? Petland gets their puppies from puppy mills to start, i will NEVER make a purchace at their store for any reason. Their animal standards have reached all time low and yes i have seen TONS of pups come out with diease. My cousin got to small terriors and both had a lung infection, heart worms(they were about a year old). I had a friend who got a hamster there, lasted 3 weeks.

Basicly its a viscous virus that can manafest in either the heart or digestive system. Theres a window period where dogs become very susceptable. Puppies are generally born immune temporarily to the virus thanks to maternal antibodies, and older dogs who have recived vacination are also ok. However if a puppy is kept in terrible conditions or the maternal antibodies wear off and its not given a vactination the dog is highly open to the problem. Not treated and theres about a 10% survival rate.

When it hits the digestive it can cause internal bleeding, cycsts and weaken the dog to other illnesses and parasites. The bacteria in the intestins may also cross into the blood and cause a condition known as sepsis. Its not pretty.

If it hits the heart then hells broken loose, unfortunetly its quick to cause heart or lung failure. This form can infect unborn fetuses if the mom is infected. There is normaly no recovery from this as owners may not even relize whats going on until its too late(signs can be breathing funny or simply just drops dead.)

That my friend, is parvo. did i mention its highly contagious to other dogs?

Any store that sells puppies/kittens should be boycotted. There is only one store left in my city that does this and in Toronto, theyved passed recent laws on banning pups in stores.
People need to RESCUE dogs. Petfinder.com has pure bred puppies that need home, its not all "mutts". I have a bloodhound and a yorkie - both pure bred - both rescues.

I don't understand why people need pure bred dogs. Mutts have proven to be healthier and live longer lives. My family rescued our first 2 dogs and they lived for 15 and 16 years. We now have 2 new rescues. They appreciate you more when you rescue them in m opinion.

Like I said, I knew it was an awful idea. I had to bite my tongue though cuz it was my girlfriends sister. Wish I wouldn't have been so nice now.

The only use for purebreds is if your showing dogs.

No need to be overly concerned - pretty soon there won't be any "purebreds" anyway. It's an absolute joke that after 10 years we've accepted "breeds" such as Labradoodles, Puggles, Morkies and Chiweenies. Call a mutt for what it is a mutt. (nothing against them, I own one of those, too) If you want it to be a "breed" give it the hundred or so years it takes to develop one. And leave my American Staffordshires and APBTs out of it completely. Bob

Those dogs are called hybrids thankyou. They are recognized as so and have standards for show. They are not purebreeds. HOWEVER, They have been bred, reproduced and achived a set standard, you and your purebreds can get over it. Its people like you who look down on Mutts and talk like thier dirt, that are putting them in a bad position.

Parvo IS a virus, but it will not manifest in the heart. It sounds like you are confusing heartworm disease and parvovirus.

It is strictly a GI virus, that causes severe vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and inappetance. It happens when puppies are not vaccinated every 3 weeks between the ages of 7 weeks and 16 weeks as they are supposed to be. A lot of the time this disease is fatal. Adult dogs can get it too. It is VERY expensive to treat, and requires a lot of work by the veterinary staff.

It sounds like this puppy was sold without a health certificate signed by a veterinarian? If that is true, I believe that is illegal (it is in Florida) and I believe you can take legal action if you choose. Is the puppy being treated for the parvo currently? If so, save all the medical notes and records from the veterinarian, and let yourself be heard once the puppy is stableized.

I mention pure breeds because many people use that as an excuse not to rescue. "Oh well I want a specific breed" or "I had a _____ as a kid and want another". I agree with you that mutts make great pets and many have fewer health problems (there are some exceptions).
We all have rescue dogs in my family, theres no smart reason to BUY a dog.

I can tell you right now that there absolutley is a form of parvo that directly manifests in the heart. Its less common because it affects pups 8weeks or less, however once infected at that age they may be sold at an older age(assuming they dont die first).

Heart worms is a completley diffrent parasitic condition. Takes around 7 months to form in the animal an requires a long treatment of normaly 30-90+ days.

Don't you hate those ignorant people? I am referring to some petstores mainly. All they want is money. I have seen leopard geckos with no heating( and stick tails). And the fact that they don't educate the buyer properly! The turtle thing still bugs me. It is disgusting.

Thanks dimidiata. Yes it is a very widely known fact that the virus can be intestinal or cardio. Luckily this pup has it only in it's intestines right now. It turned out that the vet had seen this puppy before and it's litter mates and lied to the owner of the sick dog. They found out it's the same vet petland uses and then found out that her littermates had already died. Everyone is lying to save their own backs and not caring about the pups. How can anyone do this? I am a dog person and I've always had dogs in my life but even if your not a dog person I just don't get how these people live with themselves.
