This is why genetically weak animals should be culled in my opinion... If you need to cut off cricket legs or put feeders in the fridge to slow them down so your gecko can catch its food, in my opinion, the animal should cease to exist...

i guess humans are lucky they are not leos or live in your home :main_laugh: i mean i dont hunt at all... i dont catch my food at all... its all slowed down for me at the grocery store :main_rolleyes::main_laugh:

Roaches are awesome i dont know why people are afraid of them.

Weak animals should be sold as pets only or culled if you intentions are to breed. I also wouldnt want to pass a weak animal off to someone else who will have troubles feeding them and other reasons.

Gregg M,
I'm glad most people don't share your thoughts, personally, i think they stink. I have a blind Leo, i hand feed her with mushed up bugs & calcium through a syringe every night & no way would i "cull" her just because she can't eat or catch her food.

Weak animals usually suffer more than what you can visually see. He could be slow and not be able to catch the crickets do some sort of bone damage or joint damage.

I personally do not care what you think... I know what is best for my captive leo collection...
You know what I think stinks??? You keeping a leo alive that cant hunt or eat for itself...

Leos should be actively hunting their own food and eating on their own, not living a life of being force fed mushed insects and calcium via syringe... What stinks is that the leo you are forcefully keeping alive has no quality of life...

It does seem a wee bit extreme to put down a gecko just because they have trouble catching a cricket.
You call it extreme, I call it responsible breeding and propagation of a captive species... There are not many people who want animals with defects and problems eating on their own...

Why would it have no quality of life because its blind? I'm sure just like humans it can learn its way around its tank. Unless I'm not catching onto something here (which wouldnt be a first lol)

Ummm pretty much yes... If this gecko was in a wild setting, would it live long enought to propagate its week genetics... I know that a captive setting is not the wilds of the middle east but why should gentic vigor be sacrificed in captivity...

I wasnt asking if the reason of it being blind is why it wouldnt have quality of life... I was asking why it wouldnt because of the fact its blind...lol. Well, since it's a captive leo and she has no plans to breed it, I see no reason why it cant live. I think its cool that someone would take the time to nurse it :)

The reason is because captive breed animals do not have natural selection playing a role in there lives to only pass on good genetics. Why would someone want an animal that cant hunt catch its own food let it suffer anymore?

But why would she want to kill her pet gecko because it can't catch a cricket very easily? It's not like she's breeding and trying to achieve standardized bloodlines.

You turned a thread about someone asking how they can best feed their pet that has trouble hunting into a discussion about whether we should be culling weak genetics for breeding lines.

Your response to:
"Soooo,my newest gecko Raven seems to have a hard time catchen those crix.Is it possible that living in a tank the size of a small shoebox for 6 months screwed up his skills?Maybe even his depth perception? Every time I see him go for one he strikes and comes up short, even when they are right in front of him.Is it maybe just bad eyesight?"

was:
"This is why genetically weak animals should be culled in my opinion..."

It was a bit uncalled for, IMO. If you don't have anything constructive to say to the poor girl, why say anything at all? Or did you just want to further spread your strong feelings about culling? Surely you didn't think she would off the gecko.

She can do whatever she wants with her leo... It does not matter to me that she needs to inject food into the stomach of her pet....

She interjected her own animal in this thread, asked a question, and gave her opinion on my views as far as culling goes...

I gave my opinion in the fact that if bad genetics were culled there would be far less people having to nurse their leos on a consistant basis... I think it was totally relevant to the topic...
I also answered the question as to if the "screwed up hunting skills" were due to being kept in a small bin... Naturally the answer was no... This brings it back to bad genetics being propagated in captivity... See how the two are easily intertwined???

If you insist on quoting me, atleast do it fully...

Uncalled for by whos standards??? Yours or other keepers/breeders who refuse to propagate weak genes into the captive population??? My statement was constructive depending on the angle you look at it from... Would it have been better if I told the person how to slow down its prey items??? Sometimes the truth of a situation is not what people want to hear and some people get all bent... Everyone wants the truth until the truth is not theirs...

Anyway, anyone looking to get an argument from Gregg M will meet a brick wall... I spoke to a couple of good friends today and will still give my opinion but will not argue my point to death... Take my info or leave it...

I don't think that geckos with problems like this should be bred, but, sometimes there are accidents... I don't think this owner plans to breed this gecko either from what I've read, so she's not doing anything wrong for the captive population of Leo's herself. It's a pet, for some, pets are different than they are to others, and some have the time to invest into it, so let it be...

In the wild, albino geckos would be killed off pretty fast too, as would a lot of our fancy morphs, yet we still breed and keep them.

:)
