I've noticed as of late you'll be lucky if you find anyone on the internet that knows any grammar. Its really starting to bug me. There are parts of sentences and even full paragraphs I can't even comprehend. People, learn some grammar.
I also hate it when people use expressions like "lol", "omg", or "rotfl". What ever happened to words? Just knowing that i typed those abbreviations disgusts me.

Well!

The "lol", "rotflmao"<---did I do that right?, and the other condensed internet expressions used to get to me far more than they do now.

I don't mind them. I don't use them myself, but they do not bother me anymore.

I don't necessarily mind the "lol" or other laughter variations. I don't mind "brb" either (in chat, though, NOT anywhere else) but what gets me is when someone uses abbreviations every two or three words in a sentence, doesn't punctuate, and has run-ons everywhere.

When did everyone get so lazy?

I fear I use run-ons a lot. But not because I don't know better. It's because I sometimes get typing like I speak, and MAN! can I ramble on and on...

I suppose I don't mind lol as much in chat rooms as i do in real life. When I can borderline not understand something someone types, i really get frazzled. Or, when people post things on the internet they have no idea about. Or Its also possible I don't belong in this century and I'm a kvetching old grump...

I hear you, reptinut. I don't really mind the internet expressions, as long as they stay on the INTERNET. However, I have a very harsh opinion regarding grammar, spelling, and their misuse. This isn't intended for the folks that are trying to learn english, or SERIOUS people who are mentally challenged.

When what you write is not spelled properly or is not grammatically accurate, it suggests several problems including the following.

1) You're not very educated and thus have no business commenting on the topic.
2) You don't care enough about what you're talking about to even spell or phrase it right.
3) You don't care if or how what you are saying is received accurately.
4) You are under the illusion that errors in grammar and spelling are "charming." They're not.
5) If this is your attitude with basic communication, what is your attitude with everything else?

As for ESL speakers- That is different. I am accustomed to reading/talking with people who may be highly educated but struggle with English. I can differentiate between those posts and would never criticize those people. They still use capitals at the beginning of sentences. The errors are usually consistent, medical terms are usually spelled correctly, and the thoughts formulated are intelligent.

I seriously think that people who write comments on forums and such are just writing the way that they would speak if they were casually having a conversation with someone. I am a teacher, I dislike the use of improper words, i.e. "aint" and "cuz". However..

No one is being graded on their GF comments, so there shouldn't be any pressure on them IMO. I do agree that we should be able to understand what is being said.. that is the point of communication.. but we can figure it out most of the time ;)

And using abbreviations does not necessarily mean that a person is being lazy.. maybe they have 20 other things they have to do in their day and don't have the time to put all their effort into something when they don't have to do so.. no one is supposed to be evaluating them. People make mistakes from time to time, and then there are others that truely cannot spell (such as my Dad.. who by no means is unintelligent) Even in my typing I find myself using the dot dot dots .... when I don't need them there.. its just a habit I picked up from reading a lot of posts that contain them.

I agree but I think it also goes hand in hand with people forgetting how to talk to someone. What I mean by this is people are chatting, IMing, Facebooking, Twittering and texting so much that they pretty much forget how to type/talk correctly. I take my little sister for example; She is on forums all day and texts all day. When we have family night it's real hard to get anything out of her. She'll talk and have opinions every now and then but if there is a lull in a conversation, there she goes IMing away!

You forgot to capitalize the "i"!

But yeah, for the most part I agree. ;) Since when was typing/writing in a manner easily comprehensible to those attempting to read it only relevant if you're being forced to do so by a teacher or other authority figure?
Does language (not to mention a bit of consideration for others) hold such a low post now? :(

Many people don't look stupid when they misspell words, only like they think they're making some sort of rebellion or statement by deliberately ignoring their spelling and grammar. Ah, well. :D Some people pierce their tongues....

Who taught you how to spoke? =)

Seriously though, why should you let other people's bad grammar effect your mood? It has nothing to do with you and you have little to no control over it. So why would you let something so silly bug you?
