I'm talking about crap that makes me think the person is uneducated and not worth responding to, even if they are asking an interesting question.
I'm sorry but I have a problem with this. "Uneducated and not worth responding to"? So you mean to tell me only the people that can spell and have good grammar are worthy of your assistance? Remember, they have at least showed enough initiative to seek out others help on this forum. They were at least educated enough to register and make a post. Cut them some slack. Their animals will love you for it.

"GeckoForums.net allows one user account to be registered per person. Registering multiple user accounts is a warnable offense and can result in permanent banishment from our site."

Taken from http://geckoforums.net/faq.php?faq=new_faq_item#faq_a

Unless of course you're a member of the staff, in which case I'll just be taking my leave now. I had more than enough of that particular brand of cowardly bullshit out of "Roger Jolly" years ago.

Threads like this make me laugh. Instead of having fun and trying to help or learn something. People want to nit pick about spelling. I know i'm not the best speller but I do believe we have better things to do with our time. Just my thoughts.

ok what about when the spelling and grammar effects peoples ability to read and comprehend what the person is saying? i do not have a problem with misspelled words, shoot sometimes i mispell words. but when it comes to netspeak and laziness and lolchat type of stuff that is completely different. comprehendable sentences help us to be able to help others.

It's not about people who don't know better. It's about intellectual humans being that don't give a damn about anything but themselves. This technological age has created a generation, in which should be smarter then the previous generation but that hasn't been so. They are too worried about self-interest and social status and acceptance. They don't care about punctuation, grammar, spelling, and they sure don't care much about anything else universally important. I am part of this generation and didn't want to believe it but i think it may be true.

Technology as we know it is not going away for a while. I think it is important to consider what we have lost just as much as we do about what we have gained when it comes to technology. That's my thoughts anyways.

I'm pretty confident in saying that Wowoklol does. Registered just to post on this thread by the look if it. Not the sort of thing someone who's genuinely new would stumble into and feel a need to respond to. So it's someone who didn't want to own their words using their existing user name for whatever reason. Their very choice of username is part of the whole thing. I'm not sure why they felt it was necessary to do so*, but the double login, someone pretending to be someone else, masked vigilante nonsense has begun.

Once that kind of crap starts, discussions go downhill fast because it usually spawns imitators and nobody feels like they have any responsibility for the things they choose to say. It just escalates. Some people say a guy with my style of writing can be polarizing and cause arguments... Robin's been painted with that brush once or twice too... but it is nothing like the sorts of things that are caused by someone that's feeling especially anonymous, safe in their secret identity and immune from repercussion.

*especially to post what they did, a comment that's just in-line with the discussion topic.

Wow! What a way to welcome a new poster! I'm sure if you feel I am actually someone else, you can compare IPs(oh wait, I thought you were a mod) but I can assure you that I am brand new here. I am a brand new leopard gecko owner as of about 42 hours ago. 2 girls. Pics once they settle in a bit. That was my SECOND post. Good to know I'll be chastized for sharing a differing opinion here(Thank you Holly.. You get it dear.) I'll be sure to watch what I say from now on... :main_thumbsdown: And you might want to check out that FAQ you quoted yourself before you accuse and attack another poster. I'd consider your comment trolling since you have absolutely no grounds for such a comment. Watch your step?

Theres a reason I feel as strongly as I do about said comment. I've been in customer service and on message boards for a looooong time. I've dealt with the smartest, and the dumbest. They all deserve a fair shot. I'm also a firm believer in "fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me". Some people just don't get it. I'm not going to determine that in one forum post. Or several :)

Show me one. I dunno, maybe it is THAT bad around here. I have yet to see it. And sorry if I came off a little brash, I've just witnessed this same type of discussion elsewhere and am familiar with this mindset. I call it "intolerance". And one has every right to be. I also reserve the right to point it out :)

BTW... http://www.oed.com/public/latest/latest-update/#new

New words
New initialisms in the OED
OMG and LOL, FYI

For the March 2011 release of OED Online, we have selected for publication a number of noteworthy initialisms—abbreviations consisting of the initial letters of a name or expression. Some of these—such as OMG [OMG int. (and n.) and adj.]: ‘Oh my God’ (or sometimes ‘gosh’, ‘goodness’, etc.) and LOL [LOL int. and n./2]: ‘laughing out loud’—are strongly associated with the language of electronic communications (email, texting, social networks, blogs, and so on). They join other entries of this sort: IMHO (‘in my humble opinion’) [IMHO at I n./1], TMI (‘too much information’) [TMI at T n.], and BFF (‘best friends forever’) [BFF at B n.], among others.
heheh :)

This isn't so much about a persons education, or ability to spell, as it is about people who just don't give a crap. People who are unwilling to even make an effort to clearly state what it is they are trying to say.

I think now would be a good time to stop all of this and lets move on this is geting out of hand. I think we all need to go back to helping and teaching others that come on here that are new to this forum. We should not be geting on others just because they can not spell right or whatever it is. We need to all learn how to get along and help eachother out not fight eachother helping eachother. This is a site to have fun and to also learn from and if we keep doing this well this site will not be much fun to come on. And those who are new on here makes me wonder what are they thinking of all of this?. So let's show new pepole that come on here what a great site this is and that we are very good about knowing reptiles. We are all on here for onething becuase we love reptiles and we love to give great advise to those who need it most. ;)

And that is mild compared with some I've read. At least this one I can comprehend what the author is trying to convey.

Yeah I'll agree thats slightly annoying, but not obstructive. We get he has a gecko that isn't eating. Whats more annoying to me is the first follow up. Come right out of the gate correcting spelling then in the same post MISSPELL SUBSTRATE!! heh.

btw, whats the R2Reptiles about? Seems like lingo to me! I don't get it!!?? Just kidding. I get it man. Just cut em some slack is all I'm saying!

The subforum is labeled Rants and Raves. The thread was a rant.

I'm going to try to communicate a concept. It may not work. Which is actually a bit ironic, considering.

Let's say, as a hypothetical (or let's pretend it's hypothetical anyway), that a person happens to like reptiles. This person learns things about them, they increase their knowledge and awareness, they analyze and inspect and build their experience and education. They end up being a person who's pretty good at this reptile stuff. So they go to share their interests and, yes, their knowledge, with other people. In doing so though, they come into contact with some others who can really only be called aggressively ignorant. Who don't know much, who refuse to learn or listen, who are unaware of just what kind of gap exists between what they know and what other people know. Some of the aggressively ignorant people just ignore the knowledgeable ones. Some of them go further and start trying to contradict and argue with the knowledgeable ones. The ones with an education still want to do and say the right thing, want to teach, to spread information that's better for the animals, create a social group that's filled with other smart, experienced, educated people.

Then let's say that the educated types are completely incapable of communicating any of their knowledge to the ignorant ones (both aggressively ignorant and genuinely naive and inexperienced) because of language barriers resulting from yet more ignorance. Can't teach 'em, because they don't speak anything approaching the same language. Taking the time to write a thorough, accurate and approachable post that should be a brilliant explanation of a subject that really makes a difference... but it fails to have the intended effect because someone else comes along and says "lol NO U! i no (something wrong, presented as being something right) bcuz i hav 2 gex 4 months"

I'm honestly not sure you can comprehend how frustrating that is.

Not everyone who is aggressively ignorant uses lolspeak.

But the overwhelming majority that can only communicate in lolspeak are aggressively ignorant.

So a couple people using a rant forum to vent about something that they have been exposed to for years and years, especially with the recent flare-ups of the issue... it's a pretty mild and reasonable response considering just how infuriating it actually is.
