The subforum is labeled Rants and Raves. The thread was a rant.

I'm going to try to communicate a concept. It may not work. Which is actually a bit ironic, considering.

Let's say, as a hypothetical (or let's pretend it's hypothetical anyway), that a person happens to like reptiles. This person learns things about them, they increase their knowledge and awareness, they analyze and inspect and build their experience and education. They end up being a person who's pretty good at this reptile stuff. So they go to share their interests and, yes, their knowledge, with other people. In doing so though, they come into contact with some others who can really only be called aggressively ignorant. Who don't know much, who refuse to learn or listen, who are unaware of just what kind of gap exists between what they know and what other people know. Some of the aggressively ignorant people just ignore the knowledgeable ones. Some of them go further and start trying to contradict and argue with the knowledgeable ones. The ones with an education still want to do and say the right thing, want to teach, to spread information that's better for the animals, create a social group that's filled with other smart, experienced, educated people.

Then let's say that the educated types are completely incapable of communicating any of their knowledge to the ignorant ones (both aggressively ignorant and genuinely naive and inexperienced) because of language barriers resulting from yet more ignorance. Can't teach 'em, because they don't speak anything approaching the same language. Taking the time to write a thorough, accurate and approachable post that should be a brilliant explanation of a subject that really makes a difference... but it fails to have the intended effect because someone else comes along and says "lol NO U! i no (something wrong, presented as being something right) bcuz i hav 2 gex 4 months"

I'm honestly not sure you can comprehend how frustrating that is.

Not everyone who is aggressively ignorant uses lolspeak.

But the overwhelming majority that can only communicate in lolspeak are aggressively ignorant.

So a couple people using a rant forum to vent about something that they have been exposed to for years and years, especially with the recent flare-ups of the issue... it's a pretty mild and reasonable response considering just how infuriating it actually is.

Yeah and I didn't really blast him just didn't agree with that part I quoted. No big deal. Holly sure liked my post! :)

btw, whats the R2Reptiles about? Seems like lingo to me! I don't get it!!?? Just kidding. I get it man. Just cut em some slack is all I'm saying!

holy, first off this post isnot even close to being out of hand. it's simply a discussion. some agree some don't. it's all just a discussion.

wow, i know about the Oxford dictionary.

now about this thread. it is a discussion in the rants and raves. no one has broken the TOS. we are all just talking. if you or anyone else does not like what is being said here then do not be a part of it.

seamus was not attacking you, he was simply pointing out an observation. seamus has been around all of these boards for a long long time (he is an old fart) he knows how, when he wants to, to adhear to the TOS.

I was told I had some red highlights the other day... First I had ever heard that! On my head anyhow. Some in my mustache have sort of a red tinge sometimes :)

I believe that it is perfectly healthy to get into a conversation in which two sides explain their thoughts and beliefs whether it gets a bit heated or not. That's part of the freedom we have as Americans. Like others have explained this is a rant and rave section. You are actually doing the same thing, ranting and raving about people ranting and raving. I understand where you are coming from but a thread will die eventually or be closed when the time comes.

Yes it is very healthy to have a conversation but this has turn into a nightmare not a conversation and that is not healthy.

I am brand spanking new to this forum - not new to reptiles but I have been out of keeping them for so long that I needed to find a forum to help guide me through getting back in.

I do not know anyone in this forum

I do know that when I posted this thread:

This post is what I really appreciated the most. To the point, what I needed and asked for and my Gecko was the one that definetly appreciates it the most.

This person here gave me the info I needed and was looking for - everyone else made me feel better and I am totally grateful for that but this person gave me the info that I really needed in order to care for Geek:

I am displeased by many of these responses. Soft language that seems aimed at making the thread starter feel better is causing the subsequent posts to be slightly inaccurate. They do not need to feel better, they need to have some information. It is what they asked for.

Injuries to the tail of a leopard gecko will often result in caudal autotomy; as others have mentioned the tail is built to break away in small sections, indicated by rings of tissue all the way down its length. Many significant (deep) injuries will cause the tail to then drop at one of the rings closer to the base of the tail. If that occurs, then it's fairly straightforward care for the condition, keeping it clean and watching it for signs of infection until it heals and begins regrowing.

Often and many times are not always however. There is a concern, should that crushed tail tip not drop. Having dead tissue still in contact with the live tissue forward of the break point is highly likely to result in secondary infections.

If the damaged tail tip is still connected after about forty eight hours (or less, if there are signs of infection around the break) you should definitely see a vet. The vet is likely to remove it and provide topical antibiotics, but that is a call that requires a direct, firsthand, educated observation of the condition. It is not something that anyone online can responsibly analyze from a photo and assist you with.

Edit: the wet hide may be problematic. Heat, moisture and dead tissue are pretty well guaranteed to encourage bacterial growth.

My husband is pretty challenged when it comes to computers - even though he rates as a genius on all scales. We deal with our 2 college kids giving us the lol speak and deal with it.

He mis-spells - doesnt type the correct form of the word and it makes him look dumb online - he gets it

Which is why I try to tell people - what someone is online is more often than not - completely different when you talk to them on the phone or meet them.

I always call people when issues come up online ....

It is the way of the worls these days - we do not like it- the kids know we do not like it - but it is the way it is in our household.

I am really sad to see the discord amongst the longer term members.

Take my opinion FWIW - I love this site - it has helped me like you would not believe...

Geek also says thank you to Gecko Forums
