Power Outage...

So the power was off at my house for about two hours. I kept my gecko close to me, so that he would not freeze. I'm just wondering what I can do next time so that he will be OK?

Oh I had this problem before but since I live in AZ its not usually a problem.

I would just use lots of towels in the cage and if it really cold try buying a heat pad...the ones you fill with water or there are some that you can just put on..like a back reliever pad. I hope that makes sense. But put it under the tank just like you normally would.

I think geckos can stand pretty cold temps for a few hours (not outside in the winter in Canada, though). I don't worry too much when the power goes out even in the winter. Worst case, like if we're going to be without power for 3 days, I would package up all the geckos and drive somewhere to a friend's house where there is power. If weather didn't permit, we would all just hope for the best.

I've also had this problem as long as it don't get down below 60 degrees you should be fine for evan up to 8 hours at the absolute most. but if you are very worried about it you can buy some heat packs lll reptile sells them for 1 or so and you can put a couple in their enclosure possibly under the substrate or wrapped in a wash cloth. good luck,

I wish we had the problem of it being too cool. Leos do just fine in the 60's for fairly extended periods. I'm about to have to get cool packs out for our cresteds until the power company fixes our transformer.

When our power goes out, it's usually in the spring or summer and lasts sometimes all night!! but it's normally warm enough not to worry.

We have had it go out in the winter, like in a snow storm, THAT'S when I really worry. We have had to actually put our leos in tupperwear containers and hold them next to our bodies (forget sleeping!!!). I dont know what else to do, everything in our house is electric!!
Luckily, it's only happened twice, the that's two times too many!!! :(

Any other idea's??

I haven't had the power go out long enough to be a problem in the winter (knock on wood), but I do keep heat packs on hand.....just in case.

Yeah I have some of those, but dont you need to stick em in the oven
to warm em up?
When power goes out, I cant do that! :(
Can you warm them w/ body heat only? :main_huh:

P.S. or some other non-electric way??

I have a generator fueled up and ready to go. Being in Phoenix, it is intended to run the herp room's A/C, rather than heating. :)

Wow! what a great setup! :main_yes:

How much does something like that cost?
Is that something that the whole house has to be wired too?

The heat packs I have are the ones used for shipping. You just activate them and they warm up. No oven or anything necessary. ;)

The one I have ran around 600 dollars, and isn't big enough to run the whole house, and I guess you'd need some sort of transfer switch to accomplish that. The one I have doesn't start itself during a power failure.. I have to fire it up and plug the a/c into it. I also plug the main UPS for my computer into it.

Almost got an excuse to use it last night. We got a major storm, but never lost power completely, just a bunch of brown outs.
