I am incubating eggs of a first timer - tremper PRS female x tremper male. Yesterday at 7 weeks exactly, the first one hatched to my surprise. I'm incubating at 82 and so far the earliest hatch has been 7 weeks 3 days. This one was small, but not the smallest I've hatched, and in good health. I had given up on the clutchmate because the egg has looked quite dented for awhile. At the time the first one hatched yesterday, the other egg looked just about flat, but it wasn't moldy and I figured I'd get rid of it after the other eggs in the container hatched.

This afternoon I was taking a new baby banded gecko out of that container (the banded, who is less than an inch long, jumped the container and headed off for an unscheduled adventure on my carpet and was eventually rescued . . but that's another story) when I noticed that the egg was no longer flat and that it was moving. An hour later, a tiny little gecko hatched. There's no point in even weighing her. She's a day later than the clutchmate, but half the width with a lot of yolk still attached. It's interesting how much of a size difference there is between these 2. I carefully picked the perlite off the yolk. Right now she's in one of those rectangular plastic containers that baby food comes in, the little container is in a tub in my overflow rack. She's got limited space to move around, warmth and humidity. I don't have much hope for her, but she's wiggling around, so we'll see how she does.

I just checked on her and she's up on her little legs like an actual hatchling. The container she's in makes it impossible for her to move very much and I'm hoping that will be enough to keep the yolk sac attached. More tomorrow.

As of this morning she's holding her own. I found her on her side before bed last night so I figured she wouldn't make it, but this morning she was upright, still attached to the yolk sac and trying to get out of her little container.

I came back from work today to find that the baby had detached herself from her yolk sac, which is mostly dried up, climbed out of her tiny container and was wandering around the tub. I misted her and she's licking water drops. I think she's going to be OK. I'll take some pictures of her and her clutchmate in a few days. Both are albino jungles.

After a valiant fight, I found the tiny one dead this evening. I really think it was for the best. She incubated at 82 for 7 weeks and was much smaller than she should have been so I don't think her ability to take in nutrients was really up to par. I'm just grateful that she had a few days of life and not a longer time with endless problems. To balance it out, I just put my 2nd and 3rd egg in the incubator and just welcomed my 27th leo hatchling (counting the one that died) into the world.

I'm so sorry Aliza. That sounds an awful lot like my first two hatchlings. I wonder why they push their way out prematurely. Your little one started to look like it would make it for a while but mine never even stood. Just laid down, breathed, and twitched once and a while. It was so sad. Hopefully my next hatchlings will do better, and, of course, yours too.
