What do you prefer, and why ? Back heat or bottom heat in your rack system ?

Belly heat...I go for the health of belly heat over the ease of back heat any day.

Where's the option for both? It depends on the size of the tub.

We use back heat because we don't have any huge tubs and the temperatures here are so warm all year. With belly heat the entire tub ends up being "the hot end" during the summer. We haven't had any problems with digestion so it seems to work for us.

Would you recommend both ?

I feel like using back and bottom may be a perfect solution in the sense that ambient air is increase by back heat, and moist hide temperature is increase by bottom, increasing also digestion.

There isn't really a need for that, tubs smaller than 12qt typically do better with back heart due to thier small size.

I should add, in all fairness, that my tubs are 28qt. and larger.

I don't have a rack system but I think Marcia at GGG uses back heat. It seems to work good for her.

So why does everyone prefer belly heat over back heat. I use both if possible. The way I figure is if they have back heat they will have belly heat as well due to the basking area being heated too. My 2cents worth.

I use one or the other.

6qt & 15qt get back heat while anything larger gets belly heat. Belly heat is over kill in 6 & 15 IMO.

I've always used belly heat with no ill-effects. Back heating seems inefficient to me as heat naturally rises. In theory, it would seem to be that back-heat formation would require the heat source to be on more often than belly heat. This to me means a higher risk of things going wrong, especially if you don't use proportional thermostats. This is just my opinion though....

I believe in back heat. It gives a hot spot as well as a cool spot, allowing the leo to thermal generate. By using belly heat it does not give the leo any options. What I do is when I sent up a rack, I put the tubs in with out any holes in the back. I test the temp in the rack, if it’s to low; I add a few holes in the back. I place the hole in the middle of the tub and I go Left to Right about 1/2" apart. I add holes until it hits the right temp I need. Belly heat to me seems to be to much especial for breeding females, imagine a gravid female that has not laid yet and she is constantly on a hot spot; this could be the reason for bad eggs or eggs that start to sink in. IMO

I use both. Belly for the babies, back for the adults.... I have no real preference as long as there is a way for them to thermoregulate.
