All I am saying is that something is going to give soon (soon as in the next hundred years or so).. something big is going to happen, it's not like life is just going to go on and on forever the way it is, with us overpopulating and overcrowding everywhere.. One example, the Bubonic Plague was due to overcrowding.. Events happen where millions of people world-wide get wiped out, and we shouldn't be so naive to think it won't happen in our lifetime. It's too soon to know much about this flu virus, so how can anyone truly be certain?

Call me crazy, but I think about stuff like this ALL of the time!

That is all..

My thoughts exactly. I wash my hands every time I walk in the door, but I'll have to change my clothes more often I guess. (Because of my sudden weight gain I only have a few clothes that fit so I tend to wear them a few days in a row if I haven't been active in them.)

I agree with you, but we should not expect such extreme conditions from this virus. Even in the worse scenario it should not kill so many people like in the Spanish Flu. We now have much better strategies, drugs, etc...

But it really seems that it is going to spread, sooner or later. Mainly because it seems that there were a great number of infected people in Mexico wihtout proper isolation and treatment. The virus had the opportunity to spread without much difficulty.

I guess, because winter is more than over, that the virus spreading will be contain to a reasonable extension. But, in the South hemisphere, the conditions for it to spread are much better, due to proximity of winter and the lack of so many drugs, etc. In the meantime, we (in the North hemisphere) will produce the vaccines for this strain and by the time of next winter we will be prepared for it.

I'm afraid that it will be the poorer contries that will pay the price. Let's hope not and let's hope that the virus didn't had the opportunity to go there.

i absolutly agree jess. i just dont think its going to be so dramatic as to a virus or anything like that. think about how many people are in our elder generation. think about how meny people are sitting in an old folks home. there is millions and millions of people that are over the age of 80 right now. i know its sad, but i am a realiast, and when all of them die its going to be at one time. when they all die, the world is going to go "oh my god, this place is a lot less crowded".

Lol. Actually, I can't remember where it's published..but there's a really interesting study done that estimates our population will begin to level out at around 10 billion (we're at about 7 billion now). Basically, people will just stop having as many kids when their areas get overpopulated.

So I doubt we're gonna end up wiping ourselves out...and even if we did...we'd build the population back up really quickly. We're humans...we breed quicker than rabbits lol

If we don't kill ourselves from disease or some other crazy event, it will be mother nature to do it herself IMHO She's already angry and vengeful as it is.

But I do agree.. no matter what, there will always be survivors.. I just think it would be interesting, to start ALL OVER in the world, after something really major and catastrophic happens.. that is, if you survive ;)

Sorry, but I seriously think that Yahoo's making it appear bigger than it is in reality, IMHO I feel that Yahoo's just become a laughing stock for news, no offense meant. Of course, I'll still wash my hands and stuff, I've learned all of this in kindergarden, but I'm not going to go into a panic until they bring the bombs out.

Except that it's MSNBC reporting this, not Yahoo..

I want to know exactly how much more deadly this virus is than the regular flu virus? Is it just that we don't have a vaccine for it? Or are the symptoms more severe? I can't seem to find that information anywhere.

As far as I know it is too soon to precisely know how much, but given the number of infected persons and the already dead it seems to be higher. Another serious problem is that as the virus is new in humans, it can evolve to something more dangerous... or less dangerous. So the number of persons it kills can change.

I don't know the more recent numbers, but i will try to give you an idea.

yes, the symptoms are more severe. In regular flu, around 90% of the dead are older people with compromised immune systems or with chronic diseases. When a new virus starts to attack and kill young adults (in large part of the infected ones) it is really bad news. It means it is something new that also kills the strong ones. And, it is socially disruptive, as the more active members of the society also die.

If we had a vaccine it wouldn't be a problem...

If i remind it correctly, Flu kills something like 30,000 to 50,000 persons in a year (in the USA). In a Pandemics no one knows how things will come out, but people usually use expected numbers from less than 100,000 to 500,000 (in the USA). So, use a 10 times higher as a rough estimate.

What we know now is that it is a Pandemic episode. If it will be really serious or not depends on the virus and on how we will fight it.

Not panicking but taking it seriously is what we should do. For the great majority of the persons it will just mean, perhaps, some days in bed, even in the worse scenario.

Please, take it seriously, see the following links to see what to do and what to look for:
http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/index.htm
http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/parents.htm

and

http://www.pandemicflu.gov/

I know there are a lot of people that don't believe much on the news, these days, but remember that it is WHO that is giving the alert and that it is being heard all over the world. At least here in Europe it really is.

Fort Worth ISD just announced that several schools will be closed until May 11th due to suspected swine flu cases. All of the schools are within a few miles of our home but my son goes to school in a different district.

We have some schools here that are being closed down as well.

All I know is that I don't technically need to go outside for much, so I'm keepin' my preggo butt inside!
