Exactly. Euthanasia is a very sad last resort, but it gives peace to the animal that is suffering. No one wants you to be gutted, we just dont like when animals are suffering. Again, this should be something YOU are comfortable with. You tried very hard, you should be proud of yourself for being so kind.

Yes it was. she got stronger and stronger by the day, and then just randomly took a turn for the worse. So I had her put to sleep as soon ad possible. The local vet had a vacancy, so I didn't need to wait for vacancies at the reptile specialists. After all, it wasn't in need of diagnosis, just needed putting out of her misery. Turned out that one of the local vets does a bit of reptile stuff anyway, so he had a look and said it was mbd, and then put her to sleep for me. At least she looked at peace, I'm genuinely gutted though

It was for the best. Why on earth are you even breeding a female with MBD?

I'm sorry, what? Are you kidding me. Read the whole thread before being judgemental. I didn't know she had MBD... In fact, I'm not even sure she does. She showed signs once! And that was when she was malnourished in the shop! Probably not MBD, just malnourished. The only reason I jumped to the conclusion she had MBD, was because a lot of the offspring showed obvious signs of it. However, if you read the thread, it seems like MBD can't be genetic, so get your facts right before making me feel unbelievably bad! posts like that make ne never want to use the thread again. I wish there was a "hate" option rather than "thanks".

I never said MBD was genetic (you did, actually). But, as Brad1980 pointed out, a mother who doesn't even have enough nutrients for herself (or barely enough) will only suffer if bred, as will her offspring because they can't get enough nutrients from her while the eggs are being produced.

Of course, you said once that her offspring were fine, and then another time you said there was a high number of them showing signs of MBD. So you bred her twice?

Not at all. I thought it might be, but was told it wasn't. The mother hasn't got MBD. There people go again, saying I can't look after my leo's! If you could manage to keep a Leo that healthy and strong through a breeding season then you'd be very happy. Even after laying she was a healthy size. She also had loads of calcium (which you would know if you had bothered to read the thread). She was in no way unfit for breeding! Other than the possibility of something genetic which CONTRIBUTED to MBD (not genetic MBD, other people have said other conditions can lead to MBD, of which I'm not aware my female has any). So I did the best possible job I could.

No, it was one set of offspring, its her first breeding season. I think you're confusing yourself, and shouldn't bother sticking your nose in to be honest. I've just lost a Leo that I loved to pieces and you're having a go at me?! Some life you have!

It's sad you lost the leo, but fact of the matter is that not everyone should go around breeding their leos. Things like this happen. I don't get why almost everyone who's got a leo feels the need to breed it when it's so completely unnecessary. And if you didn't even know whether MBD was genetic, obviously you didn't do a whole lot of research. I'm just hoping that maybe now you won't be breeding anymore. I'm not saying you can't take care of your leos. In fact, I never even insinuated such a thing. My point is that I don't think you should be breeding them, which is a whole different ball game.
...then I am very confused as to why such a high proportion of the hatchlings showed symptoms.
And yes, same mother. But the other offspring were fine.

I agree. I understand that leopard geckos are WONDERFUL and it's REALLY easy to fall in love with them, but you don't HAVE to breed them. If I were in your shoes I would stop breeding and just enjoy my geckos! I only have one and believe me, I have REALLY had to resist the urge to go out and buy more, because they are so adorable and have such cute personalities. Sorry to hear about the loss of the little one and you have my condolences.

What also might be at play is I think you said the mom is a rescue. I don't know 100% about geckos but I know when other animals - humans included - don't get proper care or nutrition when they are young they can develop disorders that affect their life and offspring. If she didn't receive proper care she may haven a calcium deficiency that, while it doesn't cause her to show signs as severe as MBD, makes her unable to put enough calcium into her eggs to produce healthy babies and they suffer. No idea if that's what the issue is or not but it's a thought.

I think 9AC5 has probably learned a lot from this experience and is pretty upset by this whole thing. Hopefully he'll take some time to figure out what's going on, learn from a bad experience, retire that female to be a pet, and try again in a year or two with better quality stock and a lot more wisdom under his belt.

I don't like yelling at or making anyone feel bad. I've screwed up more times than I'm brave enough to admit in public and know how upset I was the first time an animal died in my care from something I felt was my fault. I took the initiative and learned all I could from my mistakes to make them worth while and hope I'm providing much better lives for all my fuzzy and scaly friends because of them :)

Or never. Never would be good imo.

I wonder if you'd be such a **** face to face? You have absolutely no idea. I did tonnes of research, and I looked after everything well, the reason I didn't know about mbd not being genetic is because I didn't suspect the parents of it, so had no need! You are just horrible, and Katie says cut the attitude, but I had until you popped up and started accusing me of being a bad pet owner. How dare you accuse me of that. Youre just a sad person sat behind a computer screen, trying to make me feel bad. She isn't breeding again, however I don't see how you can judge that I should never do any breeding again. I might not even want to, but who the hell are you to tell me I can't. Literally fuming.

Don't care if I get kicked off the forums. Quite frankly, what you just said disgusts me.

You're very bad at reading. Pretty much every single thing you just said are things I already stated before that I wasn't saying or aren't true. Have you tried some reading comprehension classes?

Don't even care anymore. Stop being a t**t!
For your information I am top 5% of English in the country, above my age category. Possibly the worst thing you could've said.
