I just got abunch of Superworms from Rainbow. I think they said August when they will have reg. sized mealworms. I don't have many hatchlings now so I been ordering Supers. If I order Giants, the heatwave kills them faster then the leopard geckos eat them so its great to keep most in the fridge and keep out a couple days worth.

I thought if you keep supers in the fridge, you kill them :main_huh:?

I would but I really don't have the money. I'm only 14 (turning 15 next month) and I really don't have a "real" job. I have like 200 now and I trying to start a colony but I have a feeling I'm going to fail at that since it's such a small collection of them.

Those are all gone now, too. Sorry. If I find more, I'll make sure to post it.

Yeah well, I figure for now I'll do the crix. When I get the extra funds, I'll switch over to roaches and start a small colony to have awhile. Can't wait for my mealies to breed

We just talked with John from EBV today, about the regular mealworm shortage. and he said he doesn't care if he doesn't see another regular mealworm. I have been feeding small or baby Kings and they are working great and in his opinion they are better then regular mealworms, they are softer bodied not having as hard a shell as the others and more nutritious.

For what it is worth, I don't believe much of anything they say. They use wood shavings as substract for leopard geckos as well.

I am going to the Kalamazoo Rep Show in hopes of that odd vendor showing up and a private stash of mealworms.

I felt pretty lucky that I picked up 2000 mealworms and 1000 giants about 3 weeks ago. Not real big on the giants, but my colony of mealworms is getting closer to being established. I am getting all kinds of little ones crawling around in the container. So hopefully soon I will be self sufficient.

I was able to pick up 1000 at a show last weekend, so there are some still out there. I'm trying to get a lot so I don't run out and we're going to start breeding them incase this happens again. I can't get mine to eat the supers even when dusted in calcium plus. They're picky! Between all the places I've purchased them, I will have about 18K which should get me thru the shortage as long as tons don't die.

Here is another auction for anyone interested:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320271911071&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=011

Keep checking with these people. They list more every so often.

And this store just added more:

Hope that helps some of you.:)

Mike, did you recieve them okay? Were they good-quality mealworms? I just placed an order for mealies and waxies myself. Hope I got there in time.

I received them the next day and they were fine. They seemed a bit small for mediums but that was it. I've actually used some of them to start my own colonly. lol

I am sorry you don't have any confidence in the opinion of the owner of one of the largest and most successful reptile stores in the US they breed many of there own species there, including leopard geckos so they must be doing something right .
Leopard geckos have been living on and among natural substrates and surviving and evolving for thousands of years look at their terrain in the wild. packed and loose clays rocks stones pebbles sands.
many of us breeders including myself keep our leos on paper towels. Granted wood chips are not the best, but if they were having any kind of impaction problems from the substrate they are using I think they would change it.
Would you criticize some of the well known breeders on here for using loose substrates like wood chips?
