I came home today and Demon, my biggest male tokay seemed to be in a pose for the camera mood. So here he is in all his Awesomeness. We've all seen the skinny, dehydrated, parasite ridden, terrified pathetic wc petstore tokays. Well, this is what a tokay gecko SHOULD look like. Captive bred, powerful, confident, the lord of his domain. All 14.5 inches of him. After two and a half years in my care Demon and I have come to understand each other. He no longer dashes for the hide when I come in the room, he sits in the open and contemplates me. If I open his cage, he'll stand his ground, waiting for food or misting. He doesn't gape, bark, charge or attack me. If I move extremely slowly and don't push it, he'll let me touch him gently. The only time he gets defensive is when he has eggs to defend. I could take it further, handle him more often, push him to be a "tame" animal. But I don't. I let him be what he is and we respect each other. I am no longer predator and he is no longer pet. It is beyond all that. This is what I love about tokays and why these are my favorite species. And why Demon, a gecko I paid $15 dollars for, will forever be my most valued part of my reptile collection. The beauty and intelligence he displays is a mark of the most recognizable gecko species in existance: the Tokay.
