What could have happened?

This is so upsetting to me and I'm trying to figure out what happened. Yesterday I was feeding the geckos and opened a babies tub to find blood all over and the baby was dead.:( He was 4 months old and over 50 grams. He ate and pottied every single day. He just shed 2 days before this and was always active. He was kept in a tub, so he couldn't have fallen. I almost thought prolapse, but nothing was out. However, it does look like the blood came out from the vent area, not the mouth. I can't figure out how he was fine before bed and dead by the next afternoon.:( I've been a sobbing mess since yesterday. I looked him over and there were no injuries outside at all. Does anyone have any ideas? He's only ever had mealworms to eat and usually ate 12-16 a night. Temps were fine and he's kept in a rack with many other geckos. Everyone else was fine. He never lost any weight and ate up until the night/day it happened. He went to the bathroom that day, too.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,
Im so sorry for your loss,is there any possibility that a mealworm could have eaten its way out of the stomach?I only say this because today the petshop told me off for feeding mealworms to my baby gecko,saying they never did because there is the possibility of this happening?
Its so sad to lose an animal,especially when you get so attatched,my gecko is at the petshop now as he hasnt been eating and I really miss him.
Take care x

THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN. THE PETSHOP WAS WRONG.

It sounds like your first instinct might be along the right lines, but you said you didn't see any organs? What a shame. I'm sorry for your loss.

Pet shops should only be able to inform you of whats on sale:main_rolleyes:

I suggest you stop taking advice from this pet shop.

I should also add that he's never been with another gecko since he hatched. He's always been alone.

Kristi, sorry you are going through this...
There was obviously internal bleeding... There could have been a ruptured instestinal wall... Ufortunately these things can happen and there is not much you could have done to avoid it or do anything about it even if you were right there when it went down...

It doesn't seem that there was anything you could have done differently, sometimes these things just happen. I'm so, so sorry for your loss.

Thank you. I guess that makes me feel a little better. There really were no signs at all.:(

Oh, Kristi, I'm so sorry. There's nothing more jarring than have a seemingly healthy pet die unexpectedly. It's so hard to know what's going on inside those tiny bodies without behavioral changes as clues.

oh my goodness, Kristi, I'm so saddened to hear about your sudden loss. I'm confident that this was something you could not have prevented... you are a wonderful gecko mom. These tragic things just seem to happen sometimes, I actually had a somewhat similar experience myself this season... I can understand how you must be feeling, if you need to talk, I'm here my friend.

::hugs::
