Why are macks going so cheap?

Good reading ladies and gents...thanks for all the info. The market does seem to move so fast with these leos, but I guess that's part of the fun also. I am thankful for such a good community of people to discuss this stuff with. Now if I could just find some time to post some geckos to sell...;)

Supply and demand. Speaking for myself I have allready been through the $400-600 range, and above, on the Mack Snow Albinos, and did not really have any interest. I have been lowering my prices slowly ever since to try to find the next best price. Well they are now $250-300, and cheaper elsewhere, and there are still no buyers at these prices. These are year old geckos BTW, not babies, I have to do something with them.

Why should a Patternless or Blizzard Mack be any different than the Trempers? People have kept the prices higher for longer, but we have not seen many selling them at those prices. There is a point where you have no other choice.

Think about how many people are now hatching them. Then think of how many people there are out there looking to spend several hundred dollars for a gecko. There is probably more sellers, than there is buyers at this point, for alot of the Mack morphs.

I know, but honestly think I have decent prices on them. My point was I have had the same animals available for a long time without a buyer, at the higher price range, and that is now my only choice.

To be blunt about it, Shelly said this earlier and my dad always told me this about my baseball card collection. They're only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for them.

I agree too, so not sure why I am being quoted. lol I am just saying at least my prices went down gradually. Too much at once is a bad thing, I think.

One thing I've been meaning to ask...

Since this thread is about investment potential of Mack Snows - have most of you working with Mack Snow "made good" on your original investment?

I didn't invest in Macks until about a 9 months ago, but so far I made back my investment, plus some. I'd have to think that those of you who invested earlier have done even better??

Great post Paul!

I have a 1.5 in my mack tremper project and can break even by dropping my SS tempers at $225 each ( breeder group's purchase) Food, housing..... not included. I think I can break even with alittle extra to reinvest in other projects.
As we all know, selling them is the hard part and $225 won't get them from my racks :)

This has been a really great topic! I really enjoyed reading every comment. And do feel that price drops really suck like when you spend thousands of dollars on the newest morph and 6 months goes by and the price drops in half...ouch.
But when I think about that I remember why I got into breeding leopard geckos. The reason I got into breeding leopard geckos was not for the $$ but for a love of these majestic works of living art. It is amazing how they have changed over time and it will blow all our minds 20 years from now! I can't wait to see what hatches next!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is an interesting topic to read.:main_yes:
i enjoyed reading every comment. supply and demand is the same all over the world. we (in europa) were always drooling over the pictures from the other side of the ocean, but since the last 2 years the world has gotten much smaller, and shipment from the usa are very common now.
we've been breeding leos for over 7 years now (first very small, but it got bigger very fast).
i think we are some of the lucky ones, i work for an big insectbreeders, and drive to all the big wholesalers in europe.
so i was able to alway have first pick, from new animals that came in.
stil it took us over 5years to dicide if we wanted to go for it and try to make a living from leos. (bcreptiles)
i am still working for the insectbreeder, because its one of the best combinations you can have (and i think you need the extra income)
let me tell you one thing, if its not you're hobby, don't even try it!!!
if i see the hours we spend, taking care of the animals, i am better of taking a normal job. but i love working with the animals, we have all our breeders in glass vivs, no racking (just for the babies), and its great walking around in repti1 and look in all the vivs
we do special projects(more and more), but mainly linebreeding and sometimes you are lucky and get a very nice animal outof the egg.
we of course have loads of different morphs, but we only bought those after they have been on the market for a few years, because we know they drop dramaticly. last year everybody in europe was looking for raptors, and they were really expensive, but we said to everyone that looked surprised that we didn't have a raptor :"we'll have a look next year" and only bought a few cheaper het.raptors.
and voila, this year we hatched our own raptor, and at the last fair, we got 1.1 raptor for a much better price then 12 months ago.
so i got the animals that i like just had to wait a year.
if we hatch something exciting, thats just an extra, but if you think to make money, you really have to do something special. like i have read in lots of other comments.
lots of text, i hope you don't mind

My investment was $1300 for a Mack Snow male is early 2005. I would say I have made good, and then some. You will never hear me complain about the Mack Snows.

My original investment on Macks have been $400. I bought one of Albey's Mack Snow / Fasciolatus crosses as my female and I bought a Mack Snow het Tremper male from Albey. Currently, the male has been with 3 different females, a Patternless, a Tremper, and the Snow / Fasciolatus. We're waiting for eggs to hatch now. I can't wait to see what the Mack / Fasciolatus look like.

cheap?

well, not everyone is selling macks dirt cheap,
I see super snows for 175/150 some places, but yet still 300-350, or 400 others..

I guess the word has not really gotten around on prices dropping yet? lol

..granted there may be some size difference, but 50% savings is significant enough to warrant some shopping around...

I'm trying to think of possible reasons anyone would still pay that much for one...?
