Wow, my tears are falling for you and yours Marcia. How your heart must hurt to even write and let us know what happened only to save us here the grief you hold.
I had a dog go blind 3 years ago due to toxins that were left in my carpet after a professional cleaning.
Beware to all mothers and fathers out here with babies that crawl on the floor, that pick toys up and put them in there mouths..........dang.
This is so sad. My condolences. We all feel this tragedy. These are such sensitive creatures and this hard lesson is one we will all remember, if there is anything of positive nature that can come out of such a horrible event.
Wow Marcia I am so sorry My heart goes out to you and will be thinking of you and your pets in hopes all others will be ok. That is so sad that they may or may not be informed. If informed of the dangers of their chemicals it was def their resposibility to let owners know for the sake of their animals and children and if not informed then they should have been in the resposibility of the company making the chemical. HUGGS to you and yours and hope is high in regards to your others.
OMG!!! Marcia, I am so sorry for your loss. I am so glad that my husband put in all hard wood floors all over our house. Thank you so much though for the warning.
Ohh nooo!!! I'm so sorry for your loss...I know that words can't express the grief and heartache you are going through, but just remember that you are truly loved and respected by the gecko community! I wish the best for the remaining animals.
Thank you all so very much for the love and support. I was afraid to even go in the gecko room this morning, but it looks like the adult geckos are going to be OK (I hope). They are all active now, and one had been very lethargic when I found her yesterday.
I spoke to the head honcho at the carpet cleaning company, and they will be faxing me the MSDS information as soon as they speak to the technician to find out exactly what he used. I have had my carpets professionally cleaned many times without a problem, it was just this time that a carpet deodorizer was used. It was applied with one of those pressurized tanks with a hose and spray nozzle, and there was quite a bit of vapor as it was spraying out. I am thinking that the geckos I lost were all in the 3-6 gram range and just by their small body mass alone probably caused them to metabolize greater percentages of inhaled vapor through the holes in their tubs.
So for future reference, if you have your carpets treated with any chemical, either avoid the areas where your geckos are or move/cover them so that they will not be exposed. Yet another harsh and tragic lesson to be learned for ALL of us.
I think it is important to remember that most 'safe' products are tested on typical household pets... dogs, cats, hamsters, etc., and geckos are certainly not on the list. When chemicals are tested for use, they register under parts per million (ppm), and a dog or cat that weighs more than 10 pounds (4,600 grams!) has 1,000X as much body mass than a tiny 5 gram gecko. Toxicity levels would therefore be 1,000X greater for a baby gecko.
That is terrible!!! I am so sorry to hear that you had to learn about this issue the hard way.
I am a freak about natural cleaning products, even my cockroaches, mealworms and crickets get organic only food.
There has to be a green-specific company that may be a tad more expensive but are known to be completely non-hazardous to reptiles and small animals.
Again, I am so sorry to hear this tragic story.
I would be very interested to know which chemicals they used as well.
My fingers are crossed for the rest of your animals to have a full and complete recovery!
