Marcia, I'm so sorry this happened but hopefully it will be a huge warning for everyone who gets their carpets cleaned so that it doesn't happen again.

Just out of curiosity, how high off the floor were the bottom tubs?

That's terrible news, it's really unfortunate that the guy who was doing the cleaning didn't realize the chemicals could have been unsafe for the geckos. :(
My dad owns a franchise in a hotel carpet cleaning business, but does occasionally do residential, including our own home. He has cleaned my animal room several times, and I have also used the deodorizer (comes in a container that you just set out) on my shelves before. I don't think that you should all go getting paranoid about killer carpet cleaners, but just be certain that the cleaners are using stuff safe to use around pets - and even then, maybe have them use something less potent in your animal room. Different companies use different chemicals.
The spray that Marcia is referring to is normal. The stuff sprays from the nozzle, but because of the pressure there's often some excess. It is then sucked up by the vaccum. The deodorizer is also generally added to the usual chemical mixture, so if this spray hit the geckos it's possible they were exposed to almost all of the cleaning chemicals, not just the deodorizer.
Anyways, just my two cents and I hope I made some sense, I'm really tired. ^^;

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I read your post this morning and it had me in tears, not to mention it was on my mind most of the day as well. My thoughts are with you and your animals, such a horrible loss.

4" for the tubs that I lost the babies in.

In this case, it was not sprayed out of the vaccum nozzle... it was a pressurized tank that sprayed out the 'pre-treat' and 'deodorizer', and then he came through with the actual steam cleaning hose/nozzle/vacuum unit aftwerwards.

Thank you all so very much for the love and support. I was afraid to even go in the gecko room this morning, but it looks like the adult geckos are going to be OK (I hope). They are all active now, and one had been very lethargic when I found her yesterday.

I spoke to the head honcho at the carpet cleaning company, and they will be faxing me the MSDS information as soon as they speak to the technician to find out exactly what he used. I have had my carpets professionally cleaned many times without a problem, it was just this time that a carpet deodorizer was used. It was applied with one of those pressurized tanks with a hose and spray nozzle, and there was quite a bit of vapor as it was spraying out. I am thinking that the geckos I lost were all in the 3-6 gram range and just by their small body mass alone probably caused them to metabolize greater percentages of inhaled vapor through the holes in their tubs.

So for future reference, if you have your carpets treated with any chemical, either avoid the areas where your geckos are or move/cover them so that they will not be exposed. Yet another harsh and tragic lesson to be learned for ALL of us.

aww hell Marcia I'm so sorry to hear what's happened ~ fingers crossed the other reps make full recoveries :(
My family always call me a worryguts as I won't even have any kind of sprays near the rep-room .... know one thing though the carpet's coming up, going out and hard flooring going down.

Marcia, I wanted to thank you for posting this. A friend had her carpets cleaned today and since I had read this I called her yesterday and she moved all of her babies ( she has baby beardies and hatchling corns) into a room that was not being cleaned. Your story may have saved her babies.

I am so sorry Marcia!! I know when I was doing pest control for a local company here the first thing they told us was to watch for pets and let the home owner know that there could be a risk and it is better to have all the pets out of the house. I wish all companies would do that.
