Child Dies After Being Strangled by Pet Python in Florida

A 2-year-old Florida girl died after being strangled by a 12-foot pet python, police said.

The child was strangled by the snake overnight after it escaped from its aquarium at a home in Oxford, about 50 miles northwest of Orlando in central Florida, according to Sumter County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Binegar.

Paramedics said the little girl was dead when they arrived.

Deputies told MyFOXTampaBay.com that the child's name is Shaiunna and her mother's live-in boyfriend may face charges for not having a permit for the snake, a Burmese python.

Jaren Ashley Hare, 23, shared the home with Shaiunna and Hare's boyfriend Charles Jason Darnell, 32, deputies said.

Darnell told investigators that he put the snake in a bag inside its aquarium Tuesday night. But when he woke up the morning, the snake was gone. He found it wrapped around the girl in her crib.

Darnell stabbed the snake repeatedly to free the little girl, but the toddler had been bitten on the head, MyFOXTampaBay.com reported.

Investigators are now waiting for search warrant to look through the house. The snake was last seen underneath a dresser, but it's not clear if it was still alive, according to the station.

Deputies say Darnell did not have the $100 permit required to own a python in Florida, which is a second-degree misdemeanor.

Sheriff's officials told the Orlando Sentinel that the snake broke out of its glass aquarium overnight, went to the girl's bedroom and attacked her.

The newspaper said the snake slithered away and was missing.

The snake was a family pet, not one of a fast-growing population of nonnative pythons that has been spreading in the wild in southern Florida. Burmese pythons can grow more than 15 feet long and weigh more than 150 pounds.

Pythons can kill by wrapping themselves around humans.

Jorge Pino, a spokesman with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said that pythons are not native to Florida and can easily grow to 10 or 12 feet.

Some owners have freed pythons into the wild and a population of them has taken hold in the Everglades. One killed an alligator and then exploded when it tried to eat it.

Scientists also speculate a bevy of Burmese pythons escaped in 1992 from pet shops battered by Hurricane Andrew and have been reproducing since.

"It's becoming more and more of a problem, perhaps no fault of the animal, more a fault of the human," Pino said. "People purchase these animals when they're small. When they grow, they either can't control them or release them."

A group of members were talking about this in the chat.

It is absolutely horrible that, that poor child had to die and it was hard to read that article but then again I don't blame the snake, the ones I blame are the irresponsible adults in the situation.

This snake didn't know the difference between right and wrong, instead it acts on instinct and instinct alone like any and all other reptiles. I can only imagine the poor, unsecure conditions that the snake was living in that lead to this horrible incident. I just don't know what is wrong with people now a days, do they not think?

Why would you put a bagged 12' snake in a glass aquarium? The whole story sounds pretty unbelievable. I wonder what really happened...

I was thinking the same thing Mel.

That poor child. I cannot even begin to imagine the horror of it all. :( Irregardless of the bad, bad choices made my the parents, they will live with that the rest of their lives. :(

I need to go hug my kids.

There are 2 very good reasons for bagging a snake that size prior to putting it in a cage.

1) You KNOW the cage is not escape proof.

2) You have a dead child on your hands and need something to blame for the death.

Either way, as we all know, this was not a properly housed snake.

That story about bagged in an aquarum is iffy at best. What a sad story none the less.

I kept between 70 and 120 boids for many years and know better than to believe that story is the truth. That dude had no business owning that snake if he didn't know how to contain it.... PERIOD!!!!

I saw this on the news today. It's horrible the girl died but the owners of the snake probably should have taken more precautions and kept it locked into it's enclosure, especially with having a young child and possibly other small pets

I saw a more "in-depth" article in the newspaper this morning, complete with picture of the snake. The poor thing was still alive and looked REALLY underfed. The man is more than likely going to be charged with child endangerment and also fined/jailed for not having the permit for the snake. It was unknown whether the snake will be euthanized.
Such a sad story. =(((

Its unfortunate things like this happen. But they are making this out to be against snakes and everyone who owns them. This can only help out a future bans on reptiles

Food For Thought time:

"The Humane Society of the United States said including Wednesday's death, at least 12 people have been killed in the U.S. by pet pythons since 1980, including five children."

So thats 12 people in basically 30 years.... How many children have died from DOG ATTACKS in the last 30? How about people dying of alcohol and plenty of other LEGAL stuff in 30 years???

Those are not very daunting statistics if you ask me.

This is no reason to ban snakes. Unfortunate stuff happens when stupid people get involved... sorry.

That's true but as always, reptiles get the bad reputation. A dog kills someone? Unfortunate accident. Python? "They should be banned!"

I think it's very sad... an extreme case of neglect for both the child and the snake's safety. But at the same time I wonder if it was also a plot of sorts. Like the man who set his house on fire to collect insurance and punish his ex wife for the divorce.(their daughter was in his house at the time he set it on fire) or the couple here in dallas that murdered their child and threw her in a lake, then blamed it on a burgular claiming the baby was kidnapped... Long story short, it's been proven that anyone who starves or mistreats animals, will also abuse children.
