Enigma Trouble!!!

My Bell Sunglow Enigma female is now showing signs of the enigma syndrome. She is about a year old and being bred this year. She was showing minor signs at first but now seems to be full blown enigma syndrome, she is just laying around with her head tilted and if I try and pick her up or anything, she loses balance and spins around to right herself.

I know that this is a typical enigma syndrome, the questions are....will it get better or worse from here? And she I move her to her own cage for a while?

One tip that I received was to cover the enigma's cage to make it dark. This seems to really help her eat better and move around much better as well.

Ok. I will try that as well. I just moved her to her own cage as she is still moving around but with diffculty. I also need to start feeding her slurry I think, as she has lost a lot of weight from getting slightly egg bound a few months ago. She hasn't bounced back as much as I think she should have. Her tail has gotten thin and I think that may be a reason as well.

lessen the stress levels so if she has any cages mate or is in with a male remove her. stress is a trigger

I had a couple enigmas that were fine, no signs of enigma syndrome until they reached breeding size. It came on fast. They got a very bad head tilt and stopped eating. My wife is a vet tech and tried some things that they use on other animals with these issues but nothing worked. They died after only a month or two after the symtoms showed up.

This is exactly the kind of thing I've been wanting to hear in response to Krysty's "Enigma" thread. Thanks for sharing, and very sorry to hear your leo had it pop up. Good luck with her.

this is is doesnt not happen with all of them and after breeding she may go back to "normal". stress seems to be a MAJOR factor

It's very interesting to hear though, especially for me, who doesn't have that much personal experience with them. All I have to go on is other folk's experience. I will be interested to hear if she does go back to normal or not.

So it's like spider morph ball pythons and how they have a neurological disorder. Is this common with all enigma's or does it only happen to some?? sorry I'm new to this

Just wondering to the OP, maybe I misread your post, but why were you breeding an enigma showing any signs of enigma syndrome? I'm sorry, I just have this burning feeling I misread something but I'll ask anyway.

as i read the OP's post her enigma had no problems before breeding. they began to occur during/after

Robin, I read it the way Joe did, too. Also, I think Cory is a boy >.<

See robin I'm still just confused (my curiosity kills me) so I'd still really like to hear from ya Corey, the confusion comes from this sentence:

She was showing minor signs at first but now seems to be full blown enigma syndrome

that has no qualifier for exactly when the symptoms appeared. Best of luck with the lil one and keep us posted!

Thanks for all of your posts. Yes I am a male. She did not show any signs of the syndrome prior to breeding her. She only laid 3 eggs, none viable, and 1 at a time. The second egg got bound and took her forever to lay. She lost a ton of weight during this time and hasn't bounced back. She has gotten worse, less active and not eating. She is alone and tonight I am going to move her into a smaller tub. I also made up some slurry and starting hand feeding her tonight.

Update:
She seems to be doing a little better since I started feeding her slurry a couple days ago. She has gained 2 grams and is a little less lethargic. I can't see into her tub so I am not sure what is like mainly. But she did have a small but healthy poo today. So that is a good sign. She still has the head tilt going on but I am going to keep it up so maybe she will get better in that aspect. I have come to realize that the enigma gene may not be worth the troubles that it may or may not cause. Glad I didn't invest a ton of money into a bunch of enigma projects. We shall see what the future holds though. It will be nice if someone can figure out and correct the enigma issues.

It's luck of the draw like spider ball pythons, you may get one that shows little to no symptoms or you may get one that is full blown. It's a shame, why does this happen to the cool morphs that really enhance combos.

Exactly right: there is no "fixing" the Enigmas. They are what they are.

Cory, as far as the egg binding issues you are having with her, that happens sometimes to female leopard geckos, Enigma or not. I would not automatically assume that that is due to her being an Enigma. I hope she gets better for you!
