Hey Guys

Once again I have a question to ask! But this may be the last one before I actually go out and get a Leopard Gecko. I have looked on the forum to see if someone else has asked this but I couldn't find anything. Which sex should I get for my first and (for now) only Leopard Gecko. Do some of you out there have any preference? Advantages / Disadvantages :)

Thanks in advance

I've never noticed a lot. Personally, I like the LOOK of the males better.. I love how big, burly and stocky my 3 boys are. Temperment wise, they're the same, at least in my opinion. Minus my male AFT who hates me with a burning passion. XD

IMO there isnt a difference. I ended up gettting a female for my first gecko because I liked her pattern. Get what you like.:main_thumbsup::main_thumbsup::D:main_yes:

Females can still lay eggs without a male present so you'd need a lay box. They also go on hunger strikes while they're ovulating. Males are less maintenance in that way.

If you get a female and decide you want another one, there's a good chance they can share a tank. If you get a male and want another, you're out of luck unless you decide you want to breed and even then you may need to have them separated some of the time. Of my 14 leos, I have 2 males and 1 female that really "love" me.

'Well if you are getting JUST one it doesnt really matter theres no significant differences. But you said "for now", so I reccomend a female, that way you can get another one in the future without having to get a seperate tank, if yours is big enough now.

Males are easier to keep IMO; all of my males are more active and eat better. Whereas my 3 females will stop eating all together during winter and ovulating periods (probably because I don't breed them).

I voted female in case you decide to get another one in the future, which you likely will. Females can be housed together if need be. It is important to quarentine for four to six weeks when introducing new animals (just thought I'd throw that out there).

It really doesn't matter either way you go. just as long you know the pros and cons of both. i say go out get whatever you think is the most stunning animal in your price range whether it be a 2k Dreamsicle or a 20 Mack Snow. Get what you want to get.

I didn't vote cause really both have their pros and cons and i'm a firm believer that i'm not making choices for other people.

Although either gender make equally nice pets, if you were only going to have ONE, I would opt for a male for the reasons quoted above.

Hmmmm I think I'd have to say male too, but either way *shrugs* One of my males eats like a horse. Never had my female lay eggs. o.o

I'd say female since you implied you may want more...welcome to the addiction.

That's why I got a female, and the new home is in the planning stage for Leo #2 right now!! They are kind of like chips, you can't just have one:main_laugh:

But, if you have the space for two tanks (which you may need anyway - if the females don't get along) -- then it doesn't matter.

How's that for not really answering your question?:main_thumbsup:

Both my males are pretty laid back compared to my females. I haven't had Jasper long enough to see how well he eats, but I know Felix is a ravenous hunter, while both my girls often decide that they don't want to eat for one reason or another (don't like the food, are ovulating, it's close to lay time). Also females will sometimes lay eggs without a male present, and seemingly without reason, and there are certain health risks associated with a girl who's too young laying eggs. With males, you have to worry about a lot less, IMO, and they are a bit cheaper, not to mention more boldly colored, than females.

If you're only going to have ONE gecko (I bet you're not though...give it a few months and I can almost guarantee you'll get another one)....anyways, if you want just one gecko...go for a male. They don't tend to hide as much as females and are a lot more active (in my experiences). They also don't go on hunger strikes and eat better than females.
