If a you're reading "caresheets" about leopard geckos and none of them mention genetics or hets, you're reading garbage caresheets. Leopard geckos ARE genetics. It's the entire reason behind their popularity. Basic genetic terminology like heterozygous and homozygous and absolutely key to breeding any animal.

You're not going to be able to get squat for those hatchlings. Het blizzards are a dime a dozen. And there is no point in making tangs het blizzard because you can't get anything out of the blizzard gene but a white gecko.

Tony and Rob said it all. Breeding leopard geckos is a bottomless pit of expense with little to no gain. Those who do gain do so because they've been doing in for years and have the rep to back up and advertise the quality animals they produce.

Well you can tell that to the breeders with the banners up top, I read some of those and saw nothing about "het." Again, was only asking a question out of curiosity. & two, I could get money for them if I wanted, people around here aren't the smartest and just want a "pretty" gecko and could care less what the parents are or what % it is.

And that would make you a sneeky low life. Remember its about reputation. If your name starts out bad there is little you can do to get it good. I personally would feel like crap/guilty if i sold a gecko that was on the lower scale of quality for more then its worth(people actually do wanna see the parents to see size and what not). Caresheets arent gonna help you with genetics like T-ReXx(who i might add you shouldnt get snippity with. He's veryyyy insightful and very helpful(helped me out more then a handful of time:main_thumbsup:) said. You need to look at genetics. theres a book by ron tremper im sure that covers all about genetics. Good read. worth the money. Id have to dig it out and make sure but still. The morph calculators will help too. Learn the basic morphs(albinos are a good place to start) and combo morphs. But reading up on caresheets and comparing what others think is right/what they've learned over the years is still good. But they dont have genetics up(not most of them) i think the gecko ect. does if my memories right. leopard gecko wikis good too but nothing worth quoting.

The reason you don't see het too often in the animals being sold by the breeders at the top of the page is that they don't sell. If it doesn't matter what the gecko is and you can get money for it because "people aren't that smart" then why even ask?

The best advice you could get is to enjoy your geckos and don't bother breeding. The last thing I thought about was how much to sell a gecko for. I was just hoping that I'd do everything else right and have at least a couple healthy offspring to sell.

Its not that they dont sell its that they either keep them for themselves or they sell faster(depending on the morph) like say if you were looking for a pairing for a super snow bell albino(like i was) I wanted to get more then just one or two baby morphs and found that if i got a mack snow het bell albino id get 4 instead of 2 if i got a mack snow bell albino. The more genetics they have the better quality, faster they sell(theroretically), and for more. Right now geckos that are het RADAR(bell eclipse) are going for a bit where as right now het for RAPTOR(eclipse tremper) are going for ALOT less as there are plenty of RAPTORs out there and Hets for Raptors really arent needed as much.

+1 to the other part;D

How would it make me a sneeky low-life? I can understand me saying, "Oh, yes, this is a raptor," when it's a mutt between two commons.

"Caresheets arent gonna help you with genetics like T-ReXx"

Then I don't know why people are telling me to read them and why people are saying, "You must have read a crappy caresheet if it doesn't explain het." &7 no one's getting "snippity" with anyone, you two are just saying completely different things. He says if it doesn't explain het on a caresheet it's a garbage caresheet, you're saying caresheet shouldn't explain het. So...

Sorry i didnt have time to read over what i wrote, dealing with a puppy who destroies everything:p Not telling them what there getting or not showing there parents if they ask would make you sneeky. Always even if your uncertain tell what morph they are like since you didnt know what the outcome would have been for your tang and blizzard youd put something like tangxblizzard or similar. Or post pictures of the parents as some people can identify simpler morphs.

Caresheets ARE gonna help you with possible problems you may come across. Each one is slightly different which means theres just a slit more info there. I dunno if any of the ones told you how to idenfy MBD or treat it, or even what to watch to see if a gecko may have it. Or how to get a gecko refusing food to eat(BIG thing with babies there!) and loosing weight. Or..well you get it there. Caresheets however are not gonna help with genetics. Genetics are a hole nothing cup a tea. Caresheets ARE caresheets not genetic sheets. There really arent any "genetic sheets"(not that i know) SOME tho will cover basic genetics on SOME care sheets. They'd probably cover ressessive, co-dominate, and dominate traits(Ie ressessive-eclipse, albino traits, co-dominate-snows, hypos, dominate-Enigma gene) Sorry if there's any confusion.

Rofl, for the SEVENTH time... I was just asking out of curiosity. No one said I was going to breed them any time soon.

You may not have said it but its human nature to assume things. They may not have read the whole thread and seen you had mentioned you put the female with the male. This is normally, ya know, how they "get the job done" being placed together.

Well it's good to read an entire post before assuming, so people don't get "snippy."

The reason you don't see an explanation of genetics on most breeders' websites is that they are breeders; it is not their job to explain basic genetics to their customers. And het's aren't often displayed on sites because the majority of them them don't look like anything special, basic hets are visually normal leopard geckos. I assure you many of those breeders ARE producing hets, it's a natural part of using recessive genes. They are selling geckos, not explaining how their genes work or the aspects of breeding them. Responsible breeders disclose all hets that their animals may carry.

You want a breeder who explains genetics? www.geckosetc.com. Steve has a basic genetic primer on his site. He is also one of the top breeders of leopard geckos in the country.

Selling animals without disclosing their genetics DOES make one a poor breeder and displays bad character as a breeder. It's people who do that sort of thing that caused the problems that leopard geckos have in the current market: lots of animals that are genetic mysteries that cause more and more confusion and muddying of the gene pool.

Ya know I could help ya with that pupppy :main_thumbsup: Put me on your friends list if you want and we can IM about it :main_yes:

Als way way way back in the beginning of this whole mess I posted a GREAT genetics link that explaind het homo poly and all the morph PLUS descriptions of those morphs.... I sooo get overlooked :(

Here it is... again... http://www.paulsagereptiles.com/LeopardGenetics.htm

and no most care sheets don't really explain or define het homo poly and those terms which is why I posted that morph sheet which 9 times out of 10... do

;)

No one here is assuming anything about you. We're just reading what you typed. If you asked about breeding and how much you will get, then it's obvious that you're thinking about breeding. Everyone here is right. You need to research a ton. I'm starting my fourth season of breeding and I still research stuff. I didn't expect anyone to teach me. I read first and then asked questions. And no, you won't make any money. I haven't had a profit yet. You need to breed large quantities and have a great reputation to make much from breeding.

When you ask questions, you're probably going to get some answers that you don't like. Instead of getting defensive, listen to what experienced breeders are telling you. That's one of the best ways to learn.

Just to add about people not reading... an 8 page thread is a LOOOOONG thread and this one is wraught with some BS and some attitude and a lot of people don't do drama and as soon as they see the thread goes sour they either leave or jump to the end to add their 2 cents. All the more reason to keep your threads on task and not start blessing out people for bad suggestions/attitude. Just sayin... :main_yes:

...I read one of your posts>.> about your ex-marine husband...

There's no such thing as an ex-marine.

Moving on, I'm about to disagree with a bunch of you.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with breeding for the expressed purpose of making money.

Profit as motivation isn't somehow inherently evil. There's nothing about making a profit that automatically means the animals aren't cared for or the customers aren't treated well. It just means that a person wants to make some money.

Now, breeding for money is difficult. Offsetting the maintenance costs, balancing the requirements of the animals, shipping, advertising, analyzing the market in order to accurately predict what will sell- there are so many factors that make turning a profit difficult that I'd categorize it as a relatively ineffective way to make money. That doesn't mean it's an unethical way to make money.

The animals have requirements that need to be met in terms of conditions they are kept in, time spent ensuring they are clean and healthy, food, water, heat. These are concrete, practical things. Providing them does not require love. Selling them honestly and treating the customers well does not demand passion.

There is nothing inherently immoral with trying to make a profit or even being motivated by money. The reasons a person chooses to breed matter far less than the way they go about it.
