I was feeding and cleaning tubs, and there was a little baby that had a collar of skin left around it's neck from a shed, so I took it out and snipped the skin. Then I found this...

That is crazy. Are those geckos being housed with clutch mates? Could it be cage mate aggression? The bite patterns would be oddly shaped for that injuring, but it might be a possibility, although a VERY slim one, from the look of it? Also are you feeding crickets? Or is it just weak skin, which causes the skin to come off when shedding? Is it genetic in any way? Or do we know? Any theories?

That has to be incredibly painful!

All of my geckos are housed individually, and have not been fed crickets for several days. I spoke with Kelli earlier today, and she told me about her little one. I found mine like this a couple of hours later. I am heartsick, and don't know what to do for this little guy...

Did either of them just get done shedding? Is there any vitamin defecicy that can cause a gecko’s skin to weaken, and tear like this (This is just a guess; I’m not trying to suggest that your geckos aren’t being properly cared for, and just want to make sure it isn’t taken that way. It is just a theory) ? Have you talked to a vet yet?

Mine was a fresh baby, still in the incubator, in the deli cup with it's clutchmate when I discovered it a few hours ago. I do not believe this to be an injury inflicted on the baby by it's clutchmate but rather a weird shedding problem. The other weird thing is that this baby was not in the incubator when I checked last night, so it is not even 24 hours old and already shedding. :main_huh:

Yeah, mine just hatched so... I have no clue on this one. In all the years I have been breeding geckos I have never seen anything like this, and I have hatched out thousands of babies.

My baby had just gone through a shed. There was a 'ring' of loose shed around his neck, which I removed... and then I found the tear in the skin. I believe he was shedding and simply grabbed some of his good skin and pulled it off, or perhaps the shed was adhered to well and tore the skin off. The little fellow is perfectly healthy otherwise... I just hop it will heal!

OH MY GOD!

I would faint if I saw anything like that in my geckos tubs.... my goodness...

I'm so terribly sorry that this happened to you Marcia, and Kelli as well. Please keep us updated on their condition. I'm sending you both my thoughts. :)

My thoughts and prayers are with you both as well...i've seen some crazy stuff as an exotics vet tech, but nothing that drastic! It kinda reminds me of the injuries I see on dogs and cats that have been hit by cars....I hope some topical meds and good ol' TLC can take care of it. Good luck, and let us know if you guys find out any more! I''m sure we'd all like to know!

We were horrified to see, and are very sorry to hear that this is happening. This may be a bit of speculation on our part, but with the seeming correlation of the meal worm problem and everything that is going on for many breeders this year, it only seems like further evidence that we do not know what is going into or on our feeders 100% unless we breed our own feeders. Pesticides and mold can cause deformities that couldn't be imagined.

Ohhhhh. The more I look at this beautiful little boy in this condition, the more heartbroken I am. I feel so helpless to do anything for him. I love each and every one of my babies so very much, and it rips my heart out that I don't know what to do to help them. There is nothing worse than seeing something you love suffer and not know what to do.

I wanted to be a little encouraging about the babies with the skin rips. I have an adult female that was having a bad shed so I helped her "peel" her tail and it was too soon. She had several raw spots (though not as bad as the babies in the picture) and I was sure she was going to lose the tail, but she made a perfect recovery. I'm hoping that unless there's a chronic problem since they're babies they will regrow that skin quickly. You could consider consulting with a burn specialist about material they use to cover human burns and maybe a bit of that will help protect the area and promote healing.

Good luck.
