OMG! That is one of the most craziest things ever! it looks very...weird. I hope they make it ok and I am thinking the next couple of shed aren't going to be so good Hope it gets better not worst.
best of luck and hope they both recover ok
Ladies!!! I'm studdering trying to type. I wish I had the answer for you. Would you treat this like a tail loss, with neosporin?
((((Marcia...you take GOOD care of yourself too. I don't know you personally, but you really FEEL everything deeply, so please remember to give yourself a hug and keep breathing. ))))
I would be out of my mind if I found one of my geckos like that. I came home to a few minor surprises, intestinal prolapse (was one with my first male...RIP)..I even flipped on a hemipene prolapse when two of my males had them.
I hope that it isn't nothing that would happen all the time..that would be so sad and uncool...
If it is a problem with the skin sticking too much to the old skin, then (I know nothing about this, but it is a thought) why can't they be soaked in warm water before shedding, which will take off the skin for them...I do that to my geckos who have shed spots left, even though they have a moist hide...they don't use/like it.
I am also concerned about that second one, his skin came off in a striped pattern.
I have seen some leopardgeckos with bad skin injuries after intraspecial fights. All of them had a new skin layer after about a week and all recovered after about three months without any treatment.
Keep them clean and keep insects away and they have good chances to get back on the track.
What makes me thinking is the reason why this should have happened. I have never seen something like this on young animals and without any fights with other geckos,....
I keep my fingers crossed!
Karsten
Thanks everyone... my little guy seems to be acting completely normal, eating pooping, etc. I'll keep him on clean paper towel and make sure there is nothing rough in his enclosure that he could rub up against. I'l keep antibiotic salve in the wound until it starts to scab over, and then let it stay dry.
Oh My! I have never seen anything like that before! I t looks awefully painful, but I think we give these little amazing creatures less credit than they deserve. I am sure that both Geckos are going to be just fine. Marcia said her little one is acting normally, so it can't be in too much pain, I think you are doing everything you can, and I KNOW you 2 are the best Gecko keepers out there, so I am confident that those little guys (or gals) are getting the best possible care they could hope for!
I just got a reply from my vet (I sent him a photo) and he said to keep antibiotic ointment on the wound 2X daily for a week, and then switch to zinc oxide to keep it dry. He said it is a very serious wound, and told me to "hope for the best" that it will heal as an open wound.
Oh my gosh, poor babies. Thank goodness they are both in such capable hands!! Keep us updated on their progress. That is so very weird.........and to happen to both of you hours apart.........extra weird. And sad.
Yeah I've never seen that and I'm sure they're going to get some serious TLC from both of you. I hope they fully recover and are scampering about their pads in not time.
My little guy is healing very nicely. He has grown a thin layer of skin over the wound, and the torn edges have started filling in a little. I'll get updated pics next week when I do my website photos.
Good news they are healing
i hope they both heal well
i have seen something like that on an anulated gecko that was kept with leos and they had a fight it can be caused by a clutch mate but seems so odd as they was kept alone :S
Marcia,
I am glad to hear that. I just found this thread today and was going to ask for an update. I hope Kelli's is doing just as good. I had the same thought about how it had happened as you did. Glad yours is doing good. Just shows just how tough this little creatures really are!!!
