She is a Sarong cross. I really need to get some daylight photos of her!

That's what I thought at first but the head pattern looked Wamena a little. Either way she is AWESOME Marcia!!!!! I gotta get into GTP's as soon as I am done blowing every paycheck on Carpet stock and heat panels and Helix etc.....

God Bless Peanut Butter, Noodles and Soup:main_laugh::main_laugh::main_laugh:

a lot of them really are not bad. i mean some are but they get a bad rep, however biaks are horrible.

as far as the 4-5 day feeding i think thats a bit too much. i always read and was told "eat and let them poo" before giving them their next meal. they can get constipated or prolaps.

kinky boy gets fed every 7-14 days depending on the rat size, shedding and his poo cycle. he is 8 or 9 years now and he does wonderful :)

Cha-Cha, my male chondro is very sweet and gentle. He gets handled all the time.. even my grandaughter has handled him! Samba is a little more feisty and will hiss at me occasionally, but then just hides her head in her coils, lol! Both snakes are totally calm when I mist or clean, but I certainly wouldn't put my hand in their cages at night. Here's an old pic of Cha-Cha (I really need to take some updated photos...)

oh marcia the whole thing about handling them at. pfft. we use tongs to feed them every time. when we take them out, we hook them out always. once they are out they are a pleasure. we try not to associate the hand with feeding or going into their personal space. only outside of the cage. believe it or not this has worked wonderfully for us, for the past 8 or so years, except biaks lol

Robin, I agree. When I take the snakes out of their cages, I just pop off the entire perch and bring it out with the snake still coiled on it. That way they can decide what they want to do and where they want to go from the safety of their own perch. They like to explore, and Cha-Cha likes to come to mama most of the time. I use long tongs for feeding them in their cages so they will not associate a hand with food.

see we dont even do that, hook them out only. very limited hands inside the cage.. the heat of your hand can be mistaken for food and they have much longer teeth than you can tell (they have a sheath covering them). adult bites are not very nice and can do damage especially if you pull away, bleeding and teeth can be pulled out and left in your skin bleh sometimes even nerve damage.. kinky tries to bite me all the time when i am photographing him but once i hook him out he is one big baby.

Well i had the luxuary of holding samba's perch while marica cleaned the tub...needless to say i was very nervous cause she was puffing up and hissing a bit. i don't think i want to be that close to a GTP again. not for me. she was scarey

LOL, Ryan! You totally left out the part where Samba buried her head in her coils to hide from you while you were holding her perch! Pretty scary... you were scaring her! LOL!!!

After reading both of Greg Maxwell's books (several times), and talking to him and other GTP breeders in depth at the shows and on the Chondro Forum, the majority of them recommend just removing the perches and taking them out with the snake already on them. I did try using a snake hook at first, but they explained to me that having them stay on their perches outside the cages is less stressful for them and gives them a sense of security. Once it was demonstrated to me, it did make sense... although I know these snakes are intelligent enought ot be able to tell that the hook means they are going to get taken out and the tongs mean they are going to get fed.

I'm sure that eventually I will get tagged by one of them (probably Samba), and it will be my own fault. But I do NOT put my hand in their cages at night when their feeding response is at it's keenest and they are out cruising. During the daylight hours, both of them just coil up in a corner and sleep, and then hide their heads from me when I open their enclosures or mist them.

i do what has worked for me for the last 8 years. i have also talked to many a chondro breeder many do things different. kinky hooks off no stress. GTP's are not ""pet" snakes you hang out with like ball pythons or corn snakes. they are not to be underestimated. yeah i have talked to the guys at the chondo coalition, signal herp, read greg maxwells stuff, as well as dr. winslow murdochs stuff, talked in depth with hillary webb many a time and kevin and charollet from ectothermics. throwing out names isnt going to change a thing on what has worked best for me and my past 8 or 9 years of keeping green tree pythons

No! GTP's are not snakes that can be handled like a ball python or corn snake. I was shown how to remove my snakes from their enclosures by the breeders who raised them from neonates using the method they used...which was to pop off their perches. It made more sense to do it the way they did rather than training them to switch over to a hook.

I think it's really cool that there has been so much learned about these majestic snakes in the past few years, and that there is more than one way to do it! GTP's are not as much of a mystery anymore, thank goodness.

yes i know i have had several throughout the years. i had to sell all but kinky when i got my eyes done. they are indeed majestic. i think there is still a mystery about them just not as much. when they are young pulling the perch off may work well but when they are adults it's going to be quite different. the new info and such soming out is wonderful for these wonderful wonimals and this wonderful hobby :)
