I have a female Tremper that has not been well for about a week now. She has stopped eating, drinking and more strangely
-she has had hiccups for about 3 days (or breathing problems) she is breathing very slow and inconsistantly
-she isnt walking
-she is leaning to one side, meaning when she tries to move her entire left side is leaning on the ground and her right side is up in the air
-She isnt moving her legs or arms, (can but not very well) I have found her upsidedown laying on her back (looking absolutely dead) multiple times.
-She was gravid and absorbed the egg (one) her tummy is not hard at all

Her appt is Mon. I made it today... this happened so fast I have no idea what could be wrong. I had another gecko act the same EXACT way, fecals neg. gramstain neg. and is still sick (2 months now) the vet. is thinking organ failure, not MDB or Neurological. Both have had shedding problems with this also..
But with my Tremper I feel she may not pull through she is not as strong. Any ideas??? :( :( :(

Idk..the breathing thing jumps off the page as a possible RI. Idk what the tests are for that, but clear that up with the vet first...

And then, I have no idea what the other symptoms could be. If it IS organ failure, there would have to be some cause...

Is there a virus that causes organ failure in reptiles?

If you have two geckos with the same "illness"--whatever it is--then it has to be something that they've picked up, some sort of disease or parasite possibly? Though again, I don't know of a parasite that would cause those symptoms.

It's best to see what the vet says, though if they couldn't find anything on your other gecko maybe they won't find anything on this one either.

Keep us updated after the vet appointment. And I hope that someone here has at least been through this before and can give you some insight.

Good luck

Well thanks Khrysty, hopefully they do find something.. I am taking her to a different exotic vet that lives a bit further but seems to know more... he is more expensive too. She seems to be in a lot of pain so I hope she can hold on until then.. anyone experience of hear or something similar?

I have no idea what it could be. Kiya was not moving before she passed either. I think she had organ failure. However she was not leaving to one side so it is hard to say...

The thing with the leaning to the left side and not being able to move it sounds like what happens when some one has a stroke but im not sure if geckos can have one.

One of my enigmas does this, but that's a congenital problem. It sounds very bizarre, whatever it is. Hopefully this new vet will be able to give you answers.

Okay.. so sorry for the delay but here is the news....
The vet doesn't know what is wrong. Fecals were clean... He gave her a shot of calcium just incase of a deficiency ( I had to ask for the vit. D to be added..) and she is on Baytril (what he called a broad spectrum antibiotic) so if it is any type of internal infection it should be treated by this. She is not doing very well... only time will tell. As for the feeder question - yes- there was a small amount of mold in one container which was thrown out.. however if there were trace amounts not able to be seen- before I tossed them - it is possible that the mealies she ate contained some mold. I now have 26 geckos, they all eat from the same feeders and luckily no one else is acting this way (thank God) as of yet.

One day after her visit, she now has a large dark mass protruding from her abdomen. Its in the center, between and above the veins in her tummy.... its not a hard lump but it sticks out and is pretty big. She is barely breathing... she keeps turning upsidedown and I cant stop crying. :main_no: :main_no: :main_no:

Just noticed the part about some mold on the feeders... I guess whatever is happening, it could very well be because of that.

Where do you buy your feeders?

This is scary. I didn't realize mold could cause a gecko to get sick. I normally change the bedding whenever mold appears but sometimes I let it slide for a day or so. I'm going to be better about that from now on!

And I hope your gecko pulls through!! *hugs*

Thanks everyone... she is so pretty and I love her sooo much. I have had her since she was about 2 inches long and watched her grow up.... this is hard.

I breed the mealies, I do toss them out when there is mold in the substrate. Which recently I had to do with one bin.. the substrate smelled of mold and it was turning pale green. But maybe before I noticed the mold I had fed them to my geckos. She had a shot and her first dose of meds (antibiotics) before this mass or whatever appeared. She went mon. to the vet- got the shot at the office. I brought her home and let her be since she had enough stress for the day. Yesterday afternoon I have her Repta-aid since she had not eaten and I was to start the meds that night. The doc didnt tell me to wait but with her belly being on empty and plus all the stress I didnt want anything else to bother her so I chose to wait one day on the Baytril.... which I gave her when I got home last night at about 10. Now I just got home from work and found her with this..... I have pics but cannot find my USB cable! Hernia.... maybe from straining herself last night while the vet examined her??? but would it be hardened or soft tot he touch??

And thank you for the much needed hugs xo

I haven't had to deal with mold before.. what's causing mold? Perhaps I can at least help you with that. We use carrots and orange peels (ONLY) for moisture with our mealies, and there hasn't been a mold problem as of yet *knocks on wood*

I do know that Baytril can cause some side effects (like skin irritation), but I am not sure if it could cause a large bump like that.
