meh, so like on thursday i downloaded normal windows updates. in this update was the service pack 2. well after downloading and installing this from the windows updated page, i notice i have no sound. it says i do not even have a device connected, so not just the drivers the device (the same with my video driver too because they are on the same card). argg so i go to the toshiba website to look for the driver to download and i download and try to install it. i get an error before it ends. i call toshiba they are all blah blah blah reinstall the drivers, i told them i already had and by the end of the conversation they were telling me i had to reinstall windows completely. :|

however its not that simple i have TONs of stuff on the laptop and have to back ALL of it up (i think it was a total of 7 DVD disks).

anyways so after what seemed like 400 hours i reinstalled windows! i am so grr because i have to reinstall msn and fire fox, winaamp and stuff like that. I HATE THIS. right now i want to poke windows in the eye.

moral of the story : don't download service pack 2

I use to have the same problem with PCs...that's until I use Macs. Can't say enough good things about Apple products. I hope I didn't violate any TOS agreement for mentioning Apple. Sure Macs are about 3-4 times more expensive than a PC, but you don't get any viruses or problems like PCs.

Meh, I reformat routinely about twice a year. I would suggest getting an external hard drive or a secondary drive to back up all your important stuff onto. It's a good idea to have it backed up in case of a drive failure, anyway. :)

This is a common problem with "Toshiba" laptops. From there low end to very high end computers. Very fustrating, good luck with getting everything back up and running.

I would suggest making a complete image of your PC after you get everything the way you like it.

I'm still using the same cheap Dell desktop that I bought in 2004. I have of course since then added an external hard drive but have had no problems with this machine ever. My laptop is also a Dell and it's been fine. I do use the Windows XP OS.

And, NO, it's not against the TOS to mention that you like Apple computers, are you kidding me ?! ;-)

Linux OS ALL THE WAY.

Windows sucks and MACs are TOOOOOO expensive.

Linux is far superior.:main_yes::p

I definitely agree with you here. Unfortunately, I have to use windows for the software packages I run. (Maya, Unreal Engine 3, etc). WINE is a great thing in Linux but until they can get the emulation kinks worked out then I'm going to have to continue to use Windows. It doesn't help that things tend to run slower, too, since they have to be emulated.. But Linux has made leaps and bounds in the past few years so it will be interesting to see what they do.

Oh, and Vista is terrible. I hate it. I am upgrading to 7 as soon as my disk gets here. I have heard that it's a lot better from my boyfriend.

do you know how much the upgrade is?

I'm not sure what the retail goes for..depends on the package (Home, Professional, or Ultimate) and the store..but I got it at an incredible discount since I'm a student.

Home is the least expensive and I believe it runs about 50 dollars for the upgrade (if I remember correctly).

You could save yourself $50 and download a Linux OS.
And you'll NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER get a "blue" screen.
You computer will NEVER crash on you (cannot speak for firefox browser, though).
You won't randomly "loose" files.
You won't be forced to upgrade only to have your OS disconnect you from something or randomly "loose" files for you.

Sure, you can't use photoshop with Linux. But that's not on Linux, that's on Adobe and whatever deal they have going with Windows.
And, besides, I can do everything I need to do to my photos without the use of photoshop (which crashes about as much as Windows does anyway).

I understand using Windows if you have to for work, but if you don't have to, everyone should try Linux.

I LOVE IT.:main_yes:
