Swine Flu???? Should we be concerned?

I read this morning that there have been 40 documented cases so far in the U.S. but none of them have been life threatening. Basically, if you have flu-like symptoms you should go to your doctor. If you have gone to Mexico or been in contact with somebody who has, you should mention that to your doctor too.

I'm pretty sure most of us will be ok unless we go round licking Mexicans on a regular basis AND at least one of those Mexicans just hopped off a plane from Mexico City. What are the odds?

The regular flu kills thousands of people a year in the U.S. I'm more worried about that.

We're all gonna die! Just like with the Avian Flu and Mad Cow disease. I never worry about this stuff, I probably should. There's not really anything you can do other than not traveling to Mexico and washing your hands a lot. It may end up being really serious but I think it's just to early to tell right now. Most of the cases in the US have cleared up without treatment so the media may be making it out to be worse than it really is (in the states anyway).

In similar news, don't eat Alfalfa Sprouts! There's an outbreak of Salmonella poisoning linked to them.

Around.
I think they are making this out bigger then it needs to be, Mexico is a poorer country... how many people have health insurance down there.. No cases have been reported as fatal, when they do, and they have been to a hospital, and or a doctor, and then they can't be treated i will get nervous. :)

I think... idk.. I think it's silly to get people all riled about nothing essentially.

Thanks to all for your comments. I just didn't know what to think and was a little worried when I first read about this. I wasn't sure if others felt this was serious or not, so thank you for easing my mind :)

Because honestly.. IMHO.. it can't be too long (a hundred years or so?) before something big happens and takes a big chunk out of our populations world wide, right? It's inevitable.. and we are overcrowding and overpopulating more and more these days. I think about stuff like this all of the time..

But yeah.. I won't be licking any Mexicans straight from the border anytime soon... well, any Mexicans for that matter lol :D

It seems like a real issue that should make people aware of a potencial pandemics. It seems to have potencial to be something like the Spanish Flu. We should wait more to see what happens.

Having said that, should we worry? Yes.
Should we follow the recomendations from CDC, the government, etc...? Absolutely
Should we panic? Absolutely not! Besides following recomendations we should do our lifes as usual.

People, institutions, etc... are studying things like this for decades and are trained to expect something like this to happen (being it serious or not), so let us trust their judgement. They worry and act so that we can afford not to do it... so much! :)

I am concerned about it, but not panicing. I have a compromised immune system, so I do get worried about stuff like this. But, on the bright side... it could help take care of the illegal immigration problem we have in border states!

Hahaha, I WISH that would happen here in S. Florida ;)
I'm not too concerned about it either...and it seems like the disease needs to be researched a little more, IMO.

I am not too concern about it for myself but of course as any parent probably would be, I worry about my little one coming in contact with it. But in reality, there are plenty of other bugs out there just as bad or worse that we can all come in contact with on a daily basis, you just don't see them as front page news. I think the way the media is throwing around the word "Pandemic" is what has people in a panic. When I start seeing folks in my community dropping dead from swine flu then I will start to panic.

Just to be safe, make sure you wash your hands (right up to the arm) very very well everytime you go out to the streets. Change your clothes immediately after you go home. That's what I'd done during the outbreak of SARS in Hong Kong 2003...

Definitely will do Bonnie!! I gotta say, I'm definitely a tad worried because I have to ride the city bus to get most places, which is always crowded.. and well, we have tons of poeple here that jump the border between US and Mexico everyday. Plus being preggo.. makes it all a lil but scarier for me

I'm highly concerned and feel for those who are not.
This is clearly a man made bio weapon.
Seeing how things are going I think this will be a full fledged attack. If this isn't it, it will be coming soon.
