You are right that no one of of us has any control over what other breeders do or what they choose to name their gecko morphs. But, maybe if all of us breeders can see how people really feel and think about how we are making them so confused, we might try to take this into consideration whenever a new combination morph is created.

My last reply I promise.
This is where people do not all agree and never will Marcia. You can already see here some reply in positive about thi and some do not. To me, like some other people making the new short name for new combo morph is an advantage and much less confusing instead for some people, you included, is more confusing, unfortunatelly is a point you will never get everyone to agree.

Now, I would like to see THIS thread about a beautiful little gecko and not an argument.

Amen, much better said then victory parade.

Did someone say there was a Gecko Day Parade? No? Oh well.
Matt & Alberto,
As always.... AWESOME GECKO! Keep em' coming!

IMHO All of this naming debate is just nonsense. If you hatch the first-ever of a morph, call it what you want. I don't expect everyone to call the same thing by the same name, but I would hope that everyone who hatches something new would be able to explain the full genetics "in layman's terms" to someone who was buying one from them at a show or wherever they are selling it. What I foresee becoming a problem amongst our supposed tight knit group of breeders is that some people who may have been working on similar or the same morph as Matt and Alberto and did not produce one first (or at least release pics and morph name) could be upset that they did not get the chance to name it and forever have the "Morph Name" associated with their business or name. For example: Tangerine Tornados = TUG, Electric Line = HISS, Raining Red Stripes = Letkeys Leos, Firewaters = Hot Geckos, etc.... Most breeders know about these, and there must be an element of pride that some people get from knowing that "their line" is recognized as special or nameworthy. Now that the Enigma is being crossed into multiple morphs and many fascinating new morphs are being produced in rapid succession, other breeder are seeing their opportunity to name a morph (or another morph) themselves vaporize, and perhaps are getting damaged egos as a result.
My feeling is that if you work hard enough and are fortunate enough to produce the first of something that is new and unique, you should name it what you want, and take pride in the fact that you were the first, regardless of whether or not people like your choice of name for that morph. If others don't like it, well, that's their problem. If they didn't produce it first, that's just the breaks.

OK, this has gne far enough. I've been taking care of my sick child all weekend, and he is still sick. I don't have time to monitor this thread right now so I am closing it. I wish I had never even clicked on it to begin with. Sorry for all of this everyone.

OK, I had time to read the entire thread and I am opening it up again. It wasn't as bad as I was told. Anyway, please keep the discussion respectful. And Matt, initially I really did think you were joking about the name. That's why I asked the question.

My biggest complaint/criticism is that these posts serve as a form of advertisement. It's absolutely wonderful that you guys are hatching out these awesome looking new combo morphs, but is it necessary in every post about a new morph to include the name and description of all the morphs you are the first to produce this year? It's as if you're fishing for sales inquiries, which is completely unnecessary given that anyone that visits this forum already would be lining up after just seeing a picture anyway!

Now as for the name... I don't personally like this specific name. "I want to buy a few black hole leopard geckos" sounds absurd to me. Granted no more than some of the other names out there and we're at the point where it's almost impossible to come to agreements on more reasonable naming conventions.

Speaking of being nitpicky.... you misspelled gene repeatedly.

Again, congrats on hatching such awesome gecko.

I beg to differ. the LAST thing I want is to discourage posts like this at all.

I would have to say that some of the major appeal to this forum, and something that I wish I saw MORE of from big name breeders, is their "first" first everything, bring it on, I love to see it, and awe over it, and drool.

I love to know that it exists, and to have something to compare against when I, or someone else hatches something down the line.

If they get sales, more power to them. I would RATHER see a post of something new and amazing in a forum-style medium such as this, where we can ask questions, and see the parents, and know the genetics, then have it show up on kingsnake, where you have to PM them or something.

In most cases, the FIRST combos, arent going to be for sale for a WHILE, the first of anything almost never gets sold, its just something to drool over. eye and brain candy. get put on a list sure, but these threads, more then anything, are like "previews" and "sneek peaks" of things to come.

My examples are like JMG, and Steve Sykes. The threads they have started are totally rad, and just leave me wanting more. I wish all breeders did this, its like making history. That stuff is to share with the community.

edit: oopse, i wrong GMG not JMG teehee.

Okay, I can definitely see that perspective as well and nothing I stated should take away from the accomplishment of creating such beautiful geckos.
I see nothing wrong with showing off what you produce.
The distinction is that at the end of the post also saying "will be selling them" is pure marketing/advertising.

Perhaps this needs to be said again.

...and if you think Marcia's mean... :main_angry:

Realistically, we all do a little bit of self promoting. I just feel it's one thing to show off your leos, and another to show off your leos and also post a list of morphs that are going to be for sale. I don't feel the latter has a place in this subforum. People are taking issue here with perceived ego trips in naming a morph, why is it more acceptable to discuss future sales in this subforum?

It is definitely not appropriate to discuss sales in any of the forums here. Ads can be posted in the classifieds, and any discussion must be done via pm or off the boards.

I totally agree and I am sure that was an honest mistake in Matt's part. Feel free to remove his thread.
I like to add that this is a show off your leopard geckos page and nothing was said or done about all the comments and attacks to Matt about the name calling part, this is starting to feel un fear and one sided. All those comments should have been removed and transfer to another more appropriate place.
Again, just my opinion.

If myself or a mod had thought Matt's post was not appropriate, it would have deleted. If you see a post where Matt or anyone else was called a degrading name, please report the post and it will be taken care of. I reread this thread and I didn't see any name calling, but it's possible I missed it. :main_huh:
