This isn't the way the season is supposed to start...

So last night...after 54 days of incubation, one of the eggs i've been incubating at 86 degrees (give or take a degree), started to sweat. I don't have ANY good experiences with eggs that sweat...everything that started to sweat has ended up dying...so naturally I was quite upset, and I didn't get much sleep. This morning, when I checked the egg, it had a little dent, and was still sweating. When I came home from work about 10 hours later, the entire thing had collapsed, and I knew it was dead.

So...curiosity got the best of me, and out the razorblade came....I slit open the egg, only to find a fully formed nova hatchling (not the most beautiful thing i've hatched, but still a cute little gecko) that had never developed a mandible (lower jaw). Pictures are below....WARNING, they are a bit graphic....

So...there's the first egg of the season...in all it's glory. :main_thumbsdown:
It's probably better off this way, rather than having it hatch, not be able to thrive, and end up having to cull it.
The second egg hasn't done anything yet, and it doesn't look like there's any movement in that egg either.

The second clutch however, I DO see some movement in one of the eggs. The other one isn't moving, though.

What the heck is going on???

I am sorry to hear about your situation. Did you have any major temp changes during the incubation period of that egg? Hopefully your season will turn around for you.

Sorry to hear about your clutch. My season has been pretty similar, a bad first clutch and the second should come in a week or two. Good luck!

Travis....no I did not have any major temp changes/fluxes this season...actually, I thought this particular incubator was much more stable than my hovabator that I used last year. Everything seemed to be great, until this clutch decided to wait until NOW to do this...

it makes me worried about my other eggs, using this incubator has been the only change I made.

I just had a clutch that was laid today that I popped in there...i'm half thinking about breaking out the hovobator and incubating this clutch in there, just in case....

Regardless of what's going on, i'm super bummed.

I recently had an egg go moldy-sweaty a few days before its due date. I knew it was toast so I cut the shell to see what was inside and it looked quite a lot like what you have here. It was missing the lower jaw as well. The difference was, it seemed like it had stopped developing and expired some time prior - it was about 2/5ths the size of a normal baby. I know for a fact I had too many temperature fluctuations.

I've had one hatchling that made it out of the egg, then died; two pipped their eggs but didn't make it out, and that one. It's my first season breeding so I am disheartened but it's definitely a learning experience - for best results, I gotta let 'em be.

I've had vastly different seasons with exactly the same set-ups and very similar seasons with different set-ups. I'm sorry things aren't working out for you. The whole thing is a mystery to me. For the past 2 seasons (one with the hobovator and one with a mini-fridge) I've had about an 85% hatch rate with the leos and 50% with the fat tails. This year my leo hatch rate is probably going to be somewhat lower: I think the first 10 eggs or so (most of them not from first timers) were bad. Now that the season is in full swing, everything seems to be good with the eggs. Sometimes things just happen for no logical reason with these guys.

Well, last night, the clutchmate hatched. No sweating, no collapsing, or any of that bull crap. Just a nice, clean, quick hatch. Here she is! Pairing was Nova x RERS Raptor (my favorite pair)...Here is a Raptor with what I think is going to end up as a stripe or reverse stripe:

Congrats on the healthy hatchling. I am sorry that your season started out crappy but it's looking brighter now. Sometimes I wish we could just get rid of the acronyms.

She's doing great so far... very inquisitive little thing...has already discovered the gatorate cap full of calcium and has helped herself. Today I found her with calcium all over her nose, face, and caked on her front feet. ::rolls eyes:: I put her in her water dish and it was another new discovery. She's interested in the mealworms when I offer them to her and they run by her face, she's able to focus on it quite well...but has yet to eat. She's super sweet and most of the time she tolerates handling with little to no fuss. She's super cool! I can't wait to see what she's going to end up looking like!
