i would not put an oil on the eye. i do not know how eyes are in reptiles but the cornea and lens of humans eyes have barely any blood flow to them, they need air flow to heal. that is why in corneal transplants and in lens replacements no anti-rejection medications are needed. oil will cover the eye and not allow it to breath well. something water soluble would be your best bet. even when using ointments the ointment needs to be cleaned off. the eyes needs air but also moisture, so it doesn't crust up again.

Thanks everyone.

Yeah, I realized the oil probably isn't meant to go directly on the eye and got it off when I gave him the warm soak. I found some of the Genteal Gel and ordered it, so that will be here within a few days.

OMG JESS! That is just awful! I would have guessed MBD for the first one too, but never heard of the gout. That has gotta be just horrible. I hope they make it, but then again if they are too far past being able to be saved I hope they don't suffer too much longer either....especially that first one (since the eyes could probably be healed easier)! Those pictures alone make me want to cry, I couldn't imagine watching them walk around and being in such bad shape.

Make sure to keeo me updated with this, I want to hear what's going on and what happens with them all. (treatments, if they start to show improvements with them, ect) :(

*curse the previous owner a thousand times over*

I've never heard of gout in reptiles either, that's crazy. From the first photo I didn't think it looked like MBD but I had no idea what it was. They're lucky to be living with you now!

Oh, I'm glad to see those pics of his eyes looking better...I'm afraid he may be permanently blind...I can only hope not for you...have you had the rheumy girl seen by the vet yet?

Thanks for the comments everyone.

The male is pretty sad, he only really opens his eyes if I hold him, otherwise he just sits in his enclosure standing up with his eyes closed. The female walks around when she needs to, I haven't been able to get her to the vet yet. We have a lot of expenses right now but I am going to take her either this or next week, just as soon as I can afford it. I wish I could just get the medicine for gout and not have to visit the vet for the script.

I'll keep everyone updated with them. I don't expect the gout to get much better until she has about 6 months of treatment. I am going to see how the genteal gel works for the male's eyes, he requires a warm soak every day (at least) for his eyes as they are now because they do seem to dry up again after so long.

I have gotten healthy poos from both. The female ate right away, quite a few mealworms and some superworms. I couldn't get the male to eat any worms, but gave him chicken flavored baby food. He really didn't take up much of it either.

Heal Them!

Hi Jess....Got your hands full again girl.
You are a pushover Red.
No idea on gout issues.
The eyes look familiar to not only one I had, but
a thread I pulled up last night.
Ended up being shed in eyes (surprised me)
that was removed with constant flushing the eyes
with a liquid.
(IMO not salve or ointment...eyes need aired out)
Here is the part of the link in the thread(quite long)
where progress is made and it tells what was
used to treat successfully.
Take care. Proud of your gecko concerns
to take this on. All the best. TCJBHJ

Info on Gout:
Question:
What can be done for gout in the front two feet of a bearded dragon?

Answer:
Hi Rob, There was an article a little over a year ago about this in Reptiles magazine, written by Dr. Douglas Mader. He noted that allopurinol is the most common treatment and that it is safe and effective in reptiles. It reduces the amount of uric acid produced which lowers the blood uric acid level. It is the elevated blood uric acid levels that cause the formation of the gout crystals. Anti-inflammatories can be used to reduce the pain caused by gout related arthritis.

The contributing factors to developing gout are dehydration, excessive animal based protein in the diet (for herbivorous and insectivorous animals) and kidney damage. An overuse of vitamins is one of the possible causes of kidney damage but there are numerous other possibilities.

He mentioned that gout can be managed medically if caught early but if the deposits start to form around the internal organs then the prognosis is poor.

Thanks for all of the info HJ, me and my gecko love sure has gotten me into quite the situation with these two! I had no idea they were this bad until the day I got them. I was originally told the female seemed to have "bone issues" and the male seemed to be blind. I thought I'd just be dealing with some MBD and possible shed issues! But I have fallen in love with them and even if the male stays blind forever, he does look pretty hardcore and we'll love him just the way he is :)

I have been flushing out the male's eyes with saline solution, I need to go get more though because I'm already running out. He seems to never really open them unless I'm handling him, and even then he doesn't open them often. I still haven't gotten him to eat much.

The female has a vet appointment on Thursday at 2pm. I don't wish to attempt surgery, just hope to get some allopurinol and inflammatory drugs to get her started on a regimen towards being more healthy.

I'll let you all know how the vet appointment goes.
