I used to use Exo-Earth moss but it did not hold humidity that well so I just got some perlite and I am getting vermiculite soon so I am doing to use a Vermiculite and perlite soon.

The problem with vermiculite in the hide box is that some leos will eat it, and that adds a chance of impaction. Coir and paper towels are really the safest.

I use sphagnum moss. I buy it online from a reptile supplies website. Its not too exspensive and lasts a while.

The only thing i dont like about it is that it stinks like a swamp and every now and then i find sharp bits in it. So before i put it in their hides i really check it for sharp bits and have got them stuck in my fingers a few times. Yup they hurt but better me than my geckos.

I read on here recently though that if you dont keep it moist all the time it can actually draw moisture out of your gecko. So now im really careful to make sure its damp all the time, especially when i see one getting ready to shed.

Hey all!

I use sphagnum moss in my setups, like the rest said, it is cheap, natural and it isn't a headache to spot eggs in them!

I must admit, it is the first time that I have heard of using paper towel in the moist hides! How often do you guys change it out?
