Where do you put your mealworms?

I tried using little caps or bigger caps that you use get from drink bottles. The problem is, every night they climb out and roam around.

Do you guys just let it roam or what do you use to keep them in place? A link to that product would be nice

Thanks.

There's no foolproof way to keep the mealworms in. I made some ceramic bowls with smooth, convex (from the outside) sides and that didn't work 100%. Later on I found some plastic ones the same shape made by Lee I think. I use my ceramic bowls, but for the babies I use lids from Flukers cricket gel containers. I put a little gutload in with the worms which keeps them in for awhile.

I heard (from a really old post) that you can use glass ash trays. This way, the sides are taller so the mealies don't get out and the gecko can still see the mealworms since it's clear. :)

My gecko's mouth. :D :tongue3:

But yeah, I have a glass ashtray for when I need to leave a bunch in the cage for a while. Tip-proof and no escapes yet, even when I missed a pupa and it turned into a beetle in there.

I just turn all my feeders loose, I like to let my geckos hunt instead of fattening them up at a feeding dish.

It's useful to have one around just in case, though. :D

My leo won't actually eat a full meal's worth from a dish, he gets bored and leaves - but I do still find occasions when time is short and a bowl is useful, as more than a few loose mealworms unattended would (and often do) quickly escape my leo's attention and simply hide amongst the rocks until they were dug out or morphed into beetles. ;)

While it's not being a food dish, it earns its keep holding other things in the cage.

We use little glass tealight candle holders, no tipping and the sides are high enough to keep small worms in. Dollar tree has them 2 or 3 for a buck depending on what you get.

I've recently started taking a water bottle (and individual sized one) and cutting it with a wood burning tool so that it's a little less than 3/4" tall. Works great, very clear, and I haven't had one tipped yet. They sure are light, and the mealworms make tons of noise in them since the plastic is so thin.

hehe, i think im gonna catch up to you soon if i don't watch it :p

before i got these though, i let them run free like tony suggested. problem is that some of my leos won't eat mealies, only dubias and supers. i had to figure out something to keep them from getting in the hides or under the paper towels. these seem to keep in even the largest supers and small dubia as well.

Believe it or not, I've had much success using a glass ash tray. It's about 1" tall which seems perfect for the geckos to reach into but tall and steep enough with smooth glass to keep the mealworms. ;)

i just ordered some as well and I'm glad to hear it keeps the giant super in! I just hate watching the cup constantly and having to search under everything for escapees :main_thumbsup:

Thanks for the mention Robin. We have our prices bare minimum on these cups just to get them in other hobbyist's hands. They are great to work with- we replaced all our calcium dishes the first chance we had.

I put my worms in the lid of one of those bubble things like you get from a quarter toy machine,,some still escape but it works well, and he can still feed just fine.
