I never really did like those words like "lol or lmao" or rotfl and the like. I was just curious, does this bother anyone but me?

It seems like to me that we always find the things that bother us about people more then the parts of them that are positive. There so many more important things to think about and put our energy towards then the way someone wants to live and express themselves. Its life and we all should think more about what we enjoy instead of what we despise!

Whats wrong with "lol"? If you find something what do you say...

What do you call a woman with one leg? - Ilene <--- Do I say "I find this funny" or, do I say "lol"?

Get it. LOL

Just saying. =P

My vote. "They don't bother me much."

LOL Someone actually checked off every choice in the poll!! :)

Check out the date on this http://groups.google.com/group/rec.humor/browse_thread/thread/7a3256660d71ea68/ The link was found, near the bottom of this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LOL.

Hmmmmm Jan 17, 1990? Wow, very interesting. These internet slangs/shorthand have been around longer than some peoples ages on this site that seem to have an issue with using them?

I mean really? What is the issue with using short hand? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shorthand

"The earliest known indication of shorthand systems is from Ancient Greece, namely the Acropolis stone (Akropolisstein) from mid-4th century BC. The marble slab shows a writing system primarily based on vowels, using certain modifications to indicate consonants.

Hellenistic tachygraphy is reported from the 2nd century BC onwards, though there are indications that it might be older. The oldest datable reference is a contract from Middle Egypt, stating that Oxyrhynchos gives the "semeiographer" Apollonios for two years to be taught shorthand writing. Hellenistic tachygraphy consisted of word stem signs and word ending signs. Over time, many syllabic signs were developed."

"In imperial China, clerks used an abbreviated, highly cursive form of characters to record court proceedings and criminal confessions. These records were used to create more formal transcripts. One cornerstone of imperial court proceedings was that all confessions had to be acknowledged by the accused's signature, personal seal, or thumbprint, requiring fast writing. Versions of this technique survived in clerical professions into the 20th century A.D."

I think how much (if they even bother me at all) depends on the context. If I'm with my friends and we're joking around verbally then LOL JK etc.etc. is perfectly fine. If we're just speaking normally though LOL is out of place. And on the internet its the same thing, a serious article has no place for 'interwebz speek' but that funny website with the cats makes me smile and LOL.

I(being a txtaholic teen )dont mind then on the internet and over texting and stuff, but in real life it irritates me to hear people verbally say "lol" "lmao", etc. it just doesn't sound right and sounds kinda dumb IMO
