Rachael, I'm starting to have to deal with my own version of this. Rescued a couple of geckos today and they're in such bad shape. The male's eyes are just awful and he's been blinded for god knows how long so he's skinny as a pencil. Reading what you've gone through has been really helpful so thanks for posting.

Had another vet visit today. The vet looked at the skin out of her eye under a microscope. She said the skin had inflamed cells in it..thus indicating an infection.. She prescribed another antibiotic and some eye drops. So we shall see how it goes. I hope this is the fix we have been looking for.

Poor thing. It never seems to end. One of our hatchlings had some stuck shed by her eye yesterday, and the first thing that popped into my head was this thread. It appears we got it all off, but have been paying close attention to that eye. I don't want it to turn into the long battle you have been fighting. If anything you should know there are people in the community rooting for you, and learning from your example. Best of luck with the new meds.

She also pushed the UV light again... said that "they" have decided that they just look healthier with it... shrug....

Still dosing with eye drops and abx. She still keeps her eyes closed most of the time but they do look better. She has started going back to the cool side of her tank too.

She ate!!!

She is doing really well. It has been a long battle. But her eyes are open and clear and she is finally staring to eat a little.

The eyes drops we were using are Tobramycin Ophthalmic solution. I can't remember the name of the antibiotic the label fell off..but it was different from the other two I used.

Keep on using the antibiotic for a bit more even though her eyes are doing well. I myself, did not do this once and my gecko got from good back to worse in a week.:(

OMG...I am so happy for you. You'll see her apetite will go right back to where it was before. It just takes a little time. Lizzy is up to about 10 mealies a day. She has only shed once since I got the shed off of her eyes. That seems kinda wierd. Keep up the fight...they are worth every minute.:main_thumbsup:

The same thing is going on with my gecko. He eats just fine though. I noticed he was closing his left eye and my first thought was that he was tired. The next day, he still had his eye closed. So then I thought he was going blind. I took a que-tip to his eye and the next day he was holding both eyes closed. So I noticed today his left eye had a "film" on it like a blind eye. Later on after work I checked on him and his eye looks irritated. He has been scratching his eye on anything and everything. So now it looks red. I have no idea what to do. But the good thing is that he is still eating! I am glad you posted as well. And happy to hear scully is doing better!!!! :)

The antibiotics were Enrofloxacin 25mg/ml

I just want to say thank you for this thread. We struggled for months with the same problem, even after seeing a vet who put our gecko on eye drops. Our little guy won't use a humid hide so we bathed him 2 times daily to get his eyes open and help him rehydrate. I tried a series of different things with no improvement. He lost a good amount of weight because he couldn't see to find food and over all just not feeling well. I made the Golden Gate slurry and also did Repto Boost through a dropper to help with weight gain and vitamins. The Repto Boost really helped him gain his weight back.

Several different antibiotic eye drops later, we took him back to the vet again after seeing this post. The vet had no idea what the problem could be even after doing some research and examining him. I told the vet about reading this post and he prescribed the same oral antiobitic (Emrofloxacin 25 mg/ml) one drop 1x daily based on his weight. It took 3 or 4 days of being on the Emrofloxacin before he started keeping his eyes open and started eating again. He now comes out of constant hiding to hang out and acting more like himself. He is still on the antibiotic for another week. Without this post we may not have been able to get our gecko back to health, so a heartfelt thanks goes out to you and everyone else who posted.
