Mealworm Shortage

My Petco is tottally out just the minis in stock now. I think I have enought untill tuesday or Wednesday. I am going out of town Monday so I might pick some up somewhere else.

I bought a 500 count from petco and some super worms..... I'm not touching the 500 count going to try breeding them.. in the long run I think its for the best..

I just hope we don't have a mealworm, and cricket shortage, I just recently saw a place, that didn't have crickets any more either. I don't know if I can afford the other feeders. I think phoenix worms are the only other feeder small enough for hatchlings to eat.

Has something like this ever happened before?

I've seen this topic come up quite a bit on snake forums that also have lizard forums. I honestly did not realize there was this shortage. I'm sure glad we started that mealworm and superworm colony last year and have not had to deal with this. Hopefully all of you and your leos get through this ok.

Man I'm glad I decided a few months ago to try breeding mealies for fun. I have minis now that I'm growing out for my turtle, leo and crestie. I do have more than I need. If anyone lives close to Highland Park, I may be able to give a small amount of them, like 50 or so. I guess I'll be separating some more large mealies to breed out some more. I do have a ton of supers if anyone wants them, about 500 or so. My savannah is taking more and more meat than bugs these days.

This is what i know or was told by Sunshine is the grain supplier has changed the formula of the grain which is causing the mealworms to grow slower and be infertile.So if this is true were in for a long summer.Sunshine is cutting back order amounts for existing customers and told me that their breeders are running low.Not good!

Good thing I bought that massive roach colony. It's up to about 800-1000 roaches now.

We still have some small mealworms left over from our last order, but we're getting close to running out of them, and I ran out of giant mealies today..

Really? I didn't think leos would eat them. I think I just moved a few to my bug 'trash' container. I'm gonna go fish them out.

I just recieved my 3L mealworm order today. I was not happy with the packaging or anything. I am giving them 24 hours to respond to my email before I post pics and write negitive in the bio and all the other forums.

im glad i decided to breed mine then. my local pet store had a shortage a few months ago so i got crickets to hold me over till my mealies grow big enough

I don't think theres a shortage in the UK of mealworms - I have no problem getting them. Can't get phoenix worms anywhere though!!

I just placed another order with sunshine & they replied that they are out until July now.

so i was thinking, maybe the shortage has been caused by genetically modified grains.

i know that they sometimes genetically modify grain so that it has a pesticide inside of it. what if that got into the food stock for mealworm breeders?

*or* maybe they just started spraying a diferant pesticide on the grain? it doesnt have to be gentically modified to still have pesticide left over.

what do you guys think?

just a thought here but my norm meal worm place could not fill my 3-4k large orders but they did say they could fill the order with the giant meal worms you know the one they treat so they dont turn into beetle just keep growing as the worm just a thought ask for giant meal worms and see what they say

Sweet, same thing just happened to me. Tried to order 1000 giant mealies from NY Worms on Friday and just got an email this morning that my order was cancelled. Who are our remaining options right now?
