Ahhh...I agree with you Steve!.....and you were part of the marketing...how very interesting it is....

It's a time tested technique. We all know of another breeder who makes a killing the same way. I think alberto is just too proud to not involve himself in the discussion, and I must admit it does interest me to see how that ultimately reflects on him.

I've got nothing to gain or lose from being a part of it. I'll praise you when I think you're right, berate you when I think you're wrong, and invite you over for a BBQ regardless!

And I will disagree with you on your prior post about marketing hype Steve. I dont weigh the difference between a perfectly harmless post and "marketing hype being shoved down my throat" simply adding the words.."it will be sold as xyz."
I think we all know that alot of the animals being posted here are going to be sold or used as breeders to produce animals that will be eventually sold.....a little petty in my opinion....but if the mods think otherwise, I will definetly happily not include those words in any future posts other than classified ads. :)

Kelli made this post on the subject over in the 'other' thread:

It might be petty, but no moreso than much of what has been discussed. Might as well get it all out in the open. As I've noted, I draw the distinction that the post was purely a list of what is being produced with a note that they will be for sale marketed under those names. I would not take as much of an issue if it was a more personal post along the lines of, "look what I hatched, can't wait to start bringing these to market," which would have been both engaging and honest. Posting only the morph name, picture, and a note of what "will be for sale" is advertising, no matter how groundbreaking it is.

See, it's never a boring day on GF!! ;)

Now, this is just my perspective.........

I thought this was an interesting poll, about an interesting topic, fueled by several different people naming combo morphs different names. I saw lots of people having lots of different opinions (though leaning more towards one direction than another) and found that interesting. I actually ENJOY having discussions with people that both agree with my position, and *respectfully* disagree with my position. I have personally learned a lot from all sides of this discussion.

I'm sorry that anyone got their feelings hurt, because I honestly don't think that was the intention. Here's what I've learned from this thread:

1. Jeremy was the originator of the Raining Red Stripes (If you thought your ego was small BEFORE Jemerey....... ;) ) I actually thought that's what you got when you crossed the rainwaters with the redstripes, because that's what the name implied. So, my apologies to Jeremy for apparently living under a rock. ;)

2. Some people (myself included) are really OK with naming "lines" of a certain morph to designate their lineage....I honestly hadn't even considered that to be in the same league as naming a new combo morph. It gave me something to think about (though I still think of them as two separate things, it was interesting learning that some people don't.)

3. I learned that sometime Marcia is a LOA and sometimes she is a MOD (though I still have to learn the difference........) I didn't know MOD's weren't MOD's all the time.

There's actually lots more that I am contemplating now that I just had never thought about before so I for one am very glad for this thread. I'll bet lots of people are thinking about things that they haven't before - that's good!! :) I am *very* sorry if anyone got their feelings hurt, but I wanted to state (for whatever it matters) that at least some *good* has come from this, IMHO.

What is wrong with marketing hype?
Albiet, it's a negative way of saying things...but most of us with large collections need all the marketing we can get! I don't know about the rest of you but I hope to sale most of what I produce. I think someone already said this, but it's basically "marketing" every time someone posts a picture on "show of your geckos". I guess it depends on how you want to look at it.
I personally enjoy all the new names and marketing.

So much in this thread goes against what I believe. I can't understand why anyone would have a problem with someone naming something they worked hard to produce...or even why we, as a community, need to discuss it!?

As far as how all these new names affect beginners...it's my understanding that we all had to do a lot of research to get involved in this hobby, as you would in any specialized field. Maybe I'm taking this way out of context, but it really comes down to issues of freedom and hardwork to me. Breeders are, of course, free to name their new morphs what they want...and consumers are equally as free to "not buy into" a new name...for any number of reasons. Those that have done the hard work get to enjoy the success.

I'm sure this has been mentioned as well, but something that keeps coming to mind is the fact that we are dealing with probably 2 or 3 times the possible number of genetic combinations as we were even two years ago. I believe we, as a gecko community, are pretty used to keeping things simple...but that day is quickly disappearing...if it hasn't already gone. Many new morphs + many new breeders = ?? what we have here I suppose...

I want to say it seem that it's not even just the names for these enigma crosses but there are some other morph crosses that have names that have nothing to do w/ the genetics too and just as confusing.[/QUOTE

Some of the names out there were talked about. I know when the diablo blanco was released people were like "why call it that, just call it what it is". I'm sure there are 1-3 threads on that here somewhere, and I can't even count how many on the raptor. There is even one or two threads on when the creamsicle got named, and why is it called that, not hypo snow or something.
I also think what's important for the line bred tangs is to consider they weren't just named when one hatched out. These guys had quite a few seasons of these eye popping tangs before telling everyone they were going to call them something. I agree it should perhaps be breeder/name initials before it, but the tang is still in the name, so we know its a tangerine.
So no, not all names are just accepted.

Then I appologize for possibly coming across the wrong way. I know what I meant, but of course anything can be taken two ways.;)

Alberto & Matt came into this thread, and sort of made it about themselves. It is a touchy subject, I guess. You`ll notice that was when I directed my post at them. They made it open for discussion involving themselves.

I "sugarcoat" my words for noone, and the many people that know me here, know that because we have all banged heads(headbangers? lol) in the past few years. Anyway, I think they all knew what I meant, and not a word of it was meant with disrespect. Those are very serious concerns, that most of us seem to have, and I see these guys taking it personally, so I thought I`de try to help them see the points that were being made, and that it is not a "personal attack". What else can I say.

Alberto! How in the world did I turn Matt's 'Black Hole' thread into a name debate??? Please show me where I did that!
First I said you were one of, here is your first post Marcia, which was a response from another person. Nice compliments to Matt here.
Nice gecko! You're kidding about calling it "Black Hole" though, right?
[Bangs head against brick wall...]
This is the sencond one, first you make a compliments and then you return on the same sobject of the naming things and in addition you make the victory parade comment you say not meaning the way it sounds but it sounds the way it does.
What an AWESOME gecko! You should be very proud and thrilled that you produced it!!! So please don't let any of this 'naming debate' rain on your victory parade!!! It's just a debate... I don't see anybody judging any particular individual.
I think the morph naming problem will lie on the next individual who produces one... will they call it a "Black Hole", or something different that they think is a good name to call it? This is what makes it so hard for everyone to understand and keep track of. There are other breeders out there that do that, and I think this is where individual egos play into it. Then we all have to try and remember what each individual breeder calls their version of the same morph. It's confusing and frustrating!
The third one was you even admiting it, lol.
OK. What I'd like to see is THIS thread dedicated to this beautiful new gecko, and the 'morph naming debate' taken over to the appropriate thread: http://www.geckoforums.net/showthread.php?t=16120
(that applies to me, too!)

Best of intentions, perhaps, but Alberto has already stated in this thread that his intentions are to act in support of his business. If he wants to find ways of increasing sales exposure, he has no place taking offense at this discussion, it's free advertising for him right?
Yes, the naming thing I beleive will make sells easier, like some people share this feelings with me that a long name can scare buyers away, you got it and I am the only one admiting it here on a pubblic forum, I just wonder why all the other names were made for other then this same reson. I am the only honest person here as you can see to admit it. Do you want me to make a list of names with out their creator and you can tell me why they were made up? Come on now, lets all be honest, I am just part of a system that everyone has been sharing with not much problem until the Black hole post. I am still wondering why that is?

MOD, MOGL....all these terms have got my head spinning.....a new poll perhaps??..ok ...ok... bad joke
LOL!!!

I learned that sometime Marcia is a LOA and sometimes she is a MOD (though I still have to learn the difference........) I didn't know MOD's weren't MOD's all the time.
I am temporarily taking a break from being a MOD. I'm sorry, I guess I didn't make it too clear in this thread: http://www.geckoforums.net/showthread.php?t=15763

For Alberto... thank you for showing me where I was turning this thread into an argument:

This was not meant to be argumentive in any way, and I apologize if it seemed like it was. I was simply stating that the problem would be with the next person who produces one and calls it something different!

Yes, I admitted that that thread was not the appropriate place to bring the naming debate. At least I stopped! (Someone else kept it going by arguing, lol!.)

Wow, this is the understatement of the century, please count how many replies I have made only on this thread and lets see how many people have come out and admit also that they do the same thing as me by giving their creations a new name (none so far) and then get back at me. How much more then this I can involve myself in the discussion, please advise. By the way I believe that this is the first year I have named something and have not made a killing by doing it yet, I will let you know by the end of the year if it has worked out or not.

True that, but at that point the thread was way under fire and off topic already. Anyway, what is done is done, if you guys find a solution were all the leopard gecko community can live in peace with or without all the new name thing, give me a buzz.

Alberto

The solution has already been found and instituted. Individual breeders will do as they have done for decades, throughout the hobby/business of herpetoculture. That is, exactly what they believe is in their own best economic interest. RAPTOR, Blazing Blizzard, Sunglow, Hybino, Tangerine Tornado, Raining Redstripe, Eclipse (nice name, Alberto!:main_thumbsup: ), Bandit.....these and all the other names SELL GECKOS. They create excitement and, to the public, a sense of FUN! The day they no longer are a sales advantage, they will be GONE!:main_yes:

There is, IMO, ZERO chance that this will change-unless an organization of some kind is formed and SUPPORTED by the entire community. The chance of this happening is only slightly less than zero;)...

And if, against all odds, such an organization did come about, we all know whom would end up sitting on the board that decides these questions :p
