And if, against all odds, such an organization did come about, we all know whom would end up sitting on the board that decides these questions :p

My thoughts exactly, but why does there be a board? Why can't it be open polling? Granted it would take longer to count all the votes. That way everyone can have their opinion counted. An actual democratic process, not representative democracy...someone paid attention in government class lol...

Simply because we can not agree. lol
Some people would think that the whole idea is bad, some wouldn't like the options, some would forget to vote, then complain about that. blah, blah blah.

I'm a rebel, I will not be governed. My choice is my decision. It's mine and I'm keeping it. You can't have it it's mine. If you try to take it from me I will hunker down and fight for it. <<<<<<<< This is my manifesto. lol

I have a female named Ooga and bred her to a male named Booga...can i not sell their offspring as "Oogabooglings"? ;) seriously though, it is a buyer beware market, is it not? If you don't know your stuff, you will be taken advantage of...

Jeremy, you are absolutely right. And I guess that is why this will never work in the reptile community. We are, for the most part, a bunch of non-conformists. How do you make non-conformists conform? lol. Thats been the problem with governments ever since they were created. You will never make EVERYONE happy, it just isn't possible. Look at any form of government in the world. There is always someone, or some group, opposed to the way that particular administration/regime does things.

Just wishful thinking on my part I guess. But if something like this doesn't happen, we will continue to have these petty "arguements" (debates really), and never really get anything accomplished. Then we will be right back at square one, with everyone doing their own thing, only to have someone be upset about the way someone chose to name their gecko in the future.

Matt.....
There is a positive spin to be put on it too man....

Think how boring a place the world would be if we all agreed on EVERYTHING.

Tolerance is the key I think ;)

Yep-that's about the size of it! The only thing I definitely DON'T agre with is the "...and never really get anything accomplished" part. When i a few other "old=timers" started in the 70s, the following were the conditions that obtained:

*There was maybe one herper standing for every thousand today.

*There was no organized "hobby" of herping or herpetoculture.

*There were no national reptile magazines-just a couple of TINY regional newsletters (Notes from NOAH, CHS, HERPETON on the west coast). It was next to impossible to meet other reptile enthusiasts and network.

*There were no organized expos or swaps.

*Breeding reptiles, even in zoos, was so rare that, when I bred my pair of black rat snakes in 1972, the curator of the nearest zoo travelled 50 miles to see the hatchlings and talk to me about it! Pretty much everything available was aken from the wild.

*Of course there were no morphs available, except for a few of Bechtel's first amel corn snakes which were just getting into the hands of hobbyists.

*Leopard geckos were all but unobtainable until late in the decade-and then only as rare, wild caught imports.

So I think the way we do things isn't so bad. We've come a LONG way in only 3 dacades!

this post seams to be autogenerate during my reading section! look to have no finish ;)
btw
my personal "bad enbglish opinion"
i really don't like that breeder give different name to geckos with no new genetic, but i respect if somebody do that.
personally i think that kelli elettric, like tug or albey tangerine, are different (phisical trait and different way to express the tangerine in the first year) and this is the reason why CALL THEM WITH DIFFERENT NAME HAVE SENSE.
i really like alberto's work with raptor and tremper, and i give credit to breeders of my geckos for the good work that they do with them FOR MANY YEARS, but the first little one out from raptor x enigma cross is not "5 years of work" in my opinion (for example...i don't whant trash the work of ANYBODY)
i know what i'm interested in and reputable breeders give to costumers good genetic geckos background..
i like the idea of steveb to give a letter to all involved traits in a geckos selected in combo or something else..
the most sad thing is that leopard geckos market is (everyday more) a "good promotion work", like many others products around the world..
i prefer to mantein my idea of a "genetic/leo lover work" and i really prefer don't care about all new name :)

Yes. Too bad ALL the breeders involved in that project were not given the credit they deserved.

another little "5 cents"..
i stay away from the forum (this forum..that is the best leo resourche for leopard geckos breeders) for personal reason for 2/3 moths..and i really have some problems to understand all new names (and the related genetic with that all breeders need to worling with) of combos that has hatch this autumn..is impossible for the big part of people involved in geckos selection spend 5 hours every day to check news or names...
i think will be helpfull found the way to be that simple for everybody: costumers and breeders..
another time: the idea of steveb to give a "letters tracking" of the genetic background of geckos will be helpfull for everybody..

Is that something I agree so much on, I wonder who created the first enigma and what they would have named it. Those people should have been the new god of the leopard geckos to bring us this beautiful new morph. I just wonder who they are. Maybe we should trace them and let them decide what to name it, wouldn't that be the giving credit to the people that deserve it the most here?

Marula, I really do not see the difference you are talking about but this is not important. Also you are right to say that this is your opinion which is different from many others and you respect the people that do not follow your believes, that exactly the same way I think. We will never agree on this subject like many others, as I stated before many and many times, lets agree to disagree.

I think it goes without saying that we all agree to disagree. I think what we are having is a discussion.

Alberto,

Mark Bell hatched out the first Enigmas. He sent some to me to play with and cross into some other morphs. At the time, the morph did not really have a name, and so I came up with the name Enigma. Mark ASKED me to come up with a name. I thought it was a pretty cool name that fit this brand new morph that we really didn't know that much about. I did lots of marketing and sold some of the first Enigmas on the market for Mark while keeping a percentage of the money for myself. I never took credit for hatching the first Engimas, I always gave Mark credit for that.

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make with your comments...

i cant tell secrets

I have no idea what you are talking about, I suppose that's why it's called a secret. I have some of those myself.
