Price on Enigmas

Since the price on enigmas has dropped a good bit since it's release. I have noticed enigmas lasting longer on the classifieds without sales, even those more than $500 and less than $750. Do you guys think the lowering price is causing people to hold out on purchasing enigmas for sale because they've seen "cheap" priced ones? Do you think that the lower prices may cause enigmas to hard to sell in the future unless at a cheaper price because of expectations.

(By the way I'm not calling any seller out as I've seen a number of sellers on here and other classifieds with cheaper than normal priced enigmas.)

I am fully aware of the changing prices and whatnot, I'm just questioning your opinions about selling the morph. You can even put the question to other higher priced morphs such as diablo blancos and whatnot, if you wish.

There's been discussion about this before I think but I feel like it's mostly due to the economy. People just don't have that much expendable cash right now. It seems like I've seen repeated ads for Diablo Blancos and prices dropping at the same rate as well as other morphs in that price range so I don't think it's just Enigmas. Definitely has to do with supply and demand as well. Enigmas have held their value really well for a dominant morph IMO.

The sad reality of it is that cars aren't selling, higher end morphs are not selling, treework/ landscapes/ pools / new driveways and so on aren't selling, realestate isn't selling, ........

people have less expendable cash and are tightening the belt on extras and things they can put off.

Sure, some crosses will command a lower price due to supply and demand, but the economy is the major factor everyone is dealing with.

Sorry they ar beautiful animals but I have a problem spending that much $$ on a pet.

I have a friend that just bought a pure breed dog a couple months back. The dog was $800.00 and she had to drive 6 hours one way to get it. But she wanted a certain breed of dog and got it from the breeder.
The same holds true for any leopard gecko morph. If you really want that morph, you will pay whatever the amount is. If you really don't want it then you will not have it.

I think its a combo of a few things. Economy is a big one. Also I am sure a few people wonder about the stability of the morph and the health of the off spring.
I personaly am waiting cause I have no clue what kind of enigma to get. I saw a beautiful bell enigma I want but I would have nothing to breed to him. And then if I did buy him I would have to figure out what would be the best thing to breed to him. The thought of a MSBE really sounds interesting to me though.

They have plenty of dogs in shelters that need adoption that are a close drive to most of us. Dog cat whatever even my reef tank. I don't spend lots of money (initially) on pets. At most I would spend on any individual pet is 100 dollars. That is a limit I have set for myself with my wifes help as expected.

I would get an enigma if it was cheaper. I think that it does have a lot to do with the economy. For me, at least it isn't worth it getting such an expensive gecko, until I'm really settled into the hobby. That doesn't stop me from wanting one :D. I'm in the group that's waiting for the price to drop. I have seen a few cheaper ones, but they are obviously lower quality.

I agree-the economy has everything to do with the price drop on Enigma's and other high end morphs

I think that many people are even thinking as far ahead as to if they are going to be able to heat their homes this winter without applying for a second mortgage

Supply and demand does of course enter into the equation-the more of the higher end morphs available-the lower the prices are going to drop

It may just be my viewpoint but it seems to me that there are a whole lot of people out there with Enigma offspring for sale right now

I will get an Enigma someday-exactly when-I dunno and when I do-I most likely will not breed it
just my .-02

I never really thought about the economy. That does sound like it would be a big part in sales in any area.

Mel, I remembered that there was a thread, but I couldn't find it. Plus, although, I kind of set it off to Enigmas, I really meant high-end morphs in general. Enigmas were just the first morph that I thought of, as it's typically more sought after... Or at least has been for a while.

Supply and demand definitely has a role, I think. I don't know. I just hope those who have the higher end morphs get what they deserve for them, and feel they don't have to go down to $200 or less shipped just to free up space, especially if they're wanting more $$.

I would agree the economy has alot to do with this problem. People just dont have the cash to spend hundreds of dollars on what most see as a hobby. And yes i would agree it is way more then the enigmas, and the diablos, all high end stuff just isnt moving. Unfortunelty the price will drop to sell some geckos for alot of breeders. Even if that means dropping some high end morphs to 400-500 dollars, that is still alot of money for a single gecko.

The economy is probably the biggest factor, people just don't have the cash they used to especially with gas prices now. I have to agree with whoever said this earlier, but I just could never bring my self to spend that much money on an animal. The most I have ever spent was $60 for my Pueblan Milk snake. Believe me I would love to have some of these morphs and a lot of other expensive animals too i.e. GTP, SLT. The way I see it though, at least with the leo morphs is they are just a fad like many things. Eventually when they become so popular and there are so many the price will continue to drop, so why should I spend $800 on an enigma now, when maybe 10 years from now I could get one for $100? This holds true, look at some of the morphs we have when they first hit the market they were just as expensive, now you can get an albino leo for like $50 or a tangerine for $100. I love some of these morphs, but I'll just wait until the price is more reasonable or the economy comes around, I think it's more likely the first will happen before the second though :p

This is a good reason for someone to think about getting some of the less expensive morphs if they are just venturing into breeding. It's one of the reasons (besides the price) why I won't get an enigma now even if I could afford one. I sell my babies at $25 -$40 with Mack snow the highest end morph I have. In order to make breeding work for me I count on keeping about 1 baby per season and selling the rest of them. If I had to sell a gecko for hundreds of dollars --and at this point I would do that with an enigma to keep from undercutting the market-- I wouldn't be able to meet my goals.

I've kind of been enjoying the lull in the market recently to be totally honest. We have so many gorgeous geckos that I get to enjoy every day! There's no point in listing all of them until the market takes a bit of an upward turn so I'm just going to hoard them in the mean time. :main_evilgrin: JK It is nice to have an excuse for not trying to sell them though!
