Hi Robin,

I did not use vermiculite but I'm sure someone is testing it right now in a S.I.M. Results to follow.

Though my image of the mack montanus appears to be mostly perlite, it's 60% vermiculite by wieght. I was down to a little of each at the time ;)

I heard I'm going to get four of these for x-mas!
Other than the fact I didn't put anything else on the list except for supplies for breeding mealworms and crickets.
:D I can't wait till x-mas this year! XD
And yes, I know x-mas is still a couple of months away...

I have a question though. It looks like air can circulate which would mean that you would have to keep the perlite(or whatever you use) watered so that it doesn't dry out, right? I could be wrong...

ok if they are air tight wouldn't they at least need a little air to keep it from getting too humid and building up too much condensation?

my female cooker has a set of eggs on day 46 with exactly the same amount of condensation as day 2. Air tight and no increased humidity with one quick air exchange once thus far.

Ok, so how exactly does this work? Will this work with my normal hova bator? Do all I do is add water to the bottom of this container and it will keep things moist?

you use a substrate inside the container filled to the "fill mark" and incubate normally. They do indeed fit into a hovabator.

Alright I may have to order some of these here soon. Makes perfect sense tho. How much shorter is incubation time?

Oh hey Fe!

Just curious, how much perlite / vermiculite did you put in? Did you fill it to the line? And how much water did you put in?

I'm curious because I filled mine to the fill line and put in 50% perlite and 50% water (by weight), but it still seems dry. I think it was like 155g of perlite and 155g of water.

I ran mine a bit wetter in the female cooker and .9 water to 1 part sub in the male cooker. I am testing different ratios though

Gregg, I was wondering how good of a seal the lid gets on the container. They both seem to be made out of the same hard plastic, so I wasnt sure how snuggly they fit on. Also, with leopard gecko eggs, have you had any trouble with eggs being rotated by babies? Say I have a clutch that will hatch in a few days, and I just put a fresh clutch in, after the mature eggs hatch, what will become of any egg fluids that drip down through the grid? I have noticed that when they come in contact with substrate the mixture tends to mold. Lastly, would a substrate of water crystals work well for leopard gecko eggs? Thanks!

Hey Jake...
Here are some answers to your questions...

Gregg, I was wondering how good of a seal the lid gets on the container. They both seem to be made out of the same hard plastic, so I wasnt sure how snuggly they fit on.

The lid is made of a pliable TPU plastic and the body, grid, and egg bars are made of a ridged PC plastic... They are not the same material... The lid fits on very snuggly...

Also, with leopard gecko eggs, have you had any trouble with eggs being rotated by babies? Say I have a clutch that will hatch in a few days, and I just put a fresh clutch in, after the mature eggs hatch, what will become of any egg fluids that drip down through the grid?
We have had no issues with turned eggs... We have incubated monitor lizards in the container and they have not even turned any eggs... They are much stronger hatchlings than leopard geckos by a long shot... LOL

As far as egg fluids go, what becomes of the fluid when you have the eggs set up in a substrate???

Basically, the fluid drips down through the grid and gets sucked into the substrate below... It does not cause a mold or bacterial build up if that is what you were wondering about...

would a substrate of water crystals work well for leopard gecko eggs? Thanks!

Water crystals alone will make the container environment too humid for leopard gecko eggs in my opinion... Straight water crystals would be better suited for condro or carpet eggs, or any egg that needs a higher humdity level in order to hatch...

Hope this helps...
