I started a poll like this on another forum last year and was surprised to see how many people were having problems with their husband/wives/significant others.

This is a two part poll. Tell us if you are a man or woman, and then chose how your spouse is with your reptile hobby.

Also take this time to vent if you need to.

I had to select "Doesn't care so long as it makes me happy" and "Complains a little." He does like that I like them, and wouldn't ask me to get rid of all of them, but he does think I have too many. I've actually heard a lot less of the "too many" complaint since we've had Cadence.

My wife helps. She feeds them when I travel for work and sometimes goes to the shows with me to help me sell them. She is actually a much better salesperson than I am. Eventually, her knowledge base will be excellent as well.

My boyfriend only complains when it's feeding time. He doesn't like the cost factor. More so now, because of my allergies we can no longer have rodents in the house. He balks at the cost of frozen rats. He just has to remember that it's either my breathing or the lower cost of feeding the snakes. Other than that he's pretty good about everything.

Ok, I'm single but it is very apparent that my dog gets jealous of the time I spend with the geckos. I feel bad when she brings me a sock or toy when I'm working on the geckos and I don't stop to play with her. Fortunately, unlike a spouse, it's perfectly acceptable for me to put her in a cage if she gets too demanding.

My husband is a bit better than "doesn't care as long as . . . " He's happy to listen to anything I want to tell him, will do necessary care if I'm away --not really into feeding, but will do things like mist the babies and take the crestie to the basement if it's hot. He's actually developed a real love for Spencer, my crestie and is always worrying if he's cool enough or if his cage is the right size. There are other things he's interested in that I'm not really into but I hope I give him the same support.

My husband only complains when I spend more time with the geckos than I do with him, and throws a fit when there are loose feeders in the house, LOL! He is actually very supportive, and knows I love my geckos. He helps me when I vend at reptile shows, and has done a pretty good job caring for the geckos when I have been in the hospital a few times. He worries when I get so busy I'm overwhelmed.

The downside is that he is color blind and doesn't see reds or oranges very well, so all my pretty tangs and hybinos look brown to him. He raves about them anyway...

My Husband is supportive and usually comes to the shows whether I sell or just go to buy. But he has complained about the cost of food when I need to ask him for the money. He is hardly ever home anyways since he drives truck but I have always worked with animals and reptiles so no matter what he says, he would be The animals stay and he can go. One other thing is he doesn't really consider this a Job( I would like to see him take cares of them) So with the food costs he sometimes tells me to get a job( Believe me I work almost 24-7) Deb:D

Jamie helps anytime I need it, she loves to come in the room with me when I am working and show the geckos some attention, and if I need some help she is glad to help out. She is definately a holdback, lol.

I think my husband is just glad I got rid of my other hobby and into this one - this is definitely a more family-involved hobby. Right now we only have nine geckos, but he wants to get more, as well. He's very supportive and helped me pick out several of the geckos we've purchased. He doesn't *help* but that's because I do everything. He'd help in a heartbeat if I asked him to. And, interestingly enough, my sons are reaching the age that they're going to start having (more) chores...

The only thing that annoys me is he always wants to rush through the reptile shows. Okay, so it's because our 5 year old is a major pain in that sort of venue; but nevertheless I'm always bummed when we zoom in and out. I want to languish and bask in the close proximity of so many cool people and critters.

The only thing I would wish for is that he would peruse the sales ads and websites and bookmark things and make lists like I do. Of course, then our collection wouldn't fit in the living room, either...

I'm glad I saw this poll before Keith did. I'm not sure if he would have picked "spouse works side by side with me". LOL I think he does more of the work than I do. I pretty much just feed them and take pictures, he does the rest. I guess I got lucky!

I think taking the pictures IS THE HARD PART! So, HE got lucky :D

I COMPLETELY AGREE!!! I suck at taking pictures :main_angry:

My husband is finally down to minimal complaining. We got our first leo as a Christmas present for the kids. It has since become an obsession for me and we are up to 14 leos and one crestie :main_thumbsup: However, once we passed a certain number, his complaining started to reduce. I think he sees now the amount of time and effort I am willing to spend with these guys and gals and that it is so much more than a hobby to me. He does, however, use my addiction against me when it comes to buying something he wants and occasionally he makes fun of me when I'm a little "too into" the forums and giggling to myself in front of the computer about something he will never understand.

The wife likes the geckos but she's not into them as much as I am. She supports me, but at the same time gives me limits as to what I can do. I would call that fair.
