I honestly have a list of about 10 things I'd like to get (Female leos, Pair of fire skinks, Bearded dragon, African Fat-tailed geckos, Thick tailed geckos, Viper geckos, Fire bellied newts - not a reptile but close enough, Brazilian Rainbow Boa, Ball python, Corn snake - But the snakes I won't be able to get until I have my own place). Just look around til something catches your eye, then go look up care for it. That's what I do. Though my list is more or less just species I'd like to own, in reality I'll probably only end up getting 4 or 5 of them.

What exactly do you already keep?

One crested gecko, I know that's hardly anything to everyone on this forum(I suddenly feel very small just relizing this.) but I plan to do alot of reserch on them and don't really mind if their care is the polar opposite to a crestie as long as I find that I can actually take care of it properly.

I'd like a crestie, there's an adorable little red baby at the store, but I really want more uros. I'd love to eventually breed the two I have. How could I forger! I also want a viper gecko.

I know you are looking for a reptile but a frog would be cool to. Some really easy ones to keep are a whites tree frog and a green tree frog.

Honestly, you should research and aquire something YOU like, not what someone on a forum suggests... Here is why... If you get something you do not like or figure out you do not like it after you get it, you will lose interest in it fast... Then what happens is, you wind up neglecting it and giving it away to some one or some pet shop in your area for credit...

Just find what you really like and get it... No need to ask a forum because you will get a hundred different answers...

I think it always the best idea to get what you are interested in, so you don't loose interest, but being relatively new to the reptile world, you also don't want to overwhelm yourself with something that is difficult to care for. Most of the reptiles you listed are pretty easy. I think leopard geckos and ball pythons are the best beginner reptiles. Blue tongue skinks are also really easy to take care of, you just have to be willing to work with their diet and they tend to be picky eaters. Good luck on your search!

In my apartment with a roomie.
Being that you ARE on a Leo forum....what'd you expect?? My suggestion would be a Beardie.....But I do agree with Gregg that you should DEFINATELY go with something that YOU personally find interesting....Nothing like wasting your time and money, then finding out about it too late.

That so depends on what YOU want. Do you want something easy to take care of, or something more challenging... Are you going to be able to feed a snake live food, or possible kill/stun the food right before? These are based on your preferences...
Personally I love all of them! Leos and blue tongue skinks are my favorite and to me, they seem pretty easy to take care of. I also have a Water dragon, and he is a little more demanding.. Only because his take is SOOOO elegant for him and he requires certain things and he eats... ALOT. I would love to have a snake, and or a chameleon, but chameleons eat a lot as well.
All of them are awesome! Just do your research and pick and choose the right one for you. Or go crazy and get all and/or more than one =] Like me. lol.

Hey, thought I'd add my 2c, besides rather getting the reptiel you want make sure that the animal will fit in your budget, not only for a proper set up from the day you purchase the reptile, but over LONG term> ESPECIALLY if you choose a lizard or snake which grows really big.

Maybe narrow down your likes to two diff. animals and research more than the basics and ask how others find keeping these....

Hope you get sorted :)

That is a great point that I don't see brought up often enough. Bearded dragons are a perfect example, they are often recommended as a beginner reptile, but I see a lot of unhealthy dragons because people don't realize how expensive it is to properly care for them. Research is the key to success with any animal, and financial considerations seem to be the most neglected part of that research.

That being said, I will second Dan K's suggestion for a Hog Island Boa, they are beautiful and moderately sized, much less likely to overwhelm a beginning snake keeper than the more popular Colombian Boa. :main_thumbsup:

Personally my vote would go to a blue tongue skink. Geckos are fine and all but I love my BTS, he's quiet something. <3 You can handle a BTS more than you could a gecko. Hershal (my BTS) loves being outside of his cage, roaming or under the blankets with me.
They do tend to need more care than say a crestie or leopard gecko though.

Why he's called "blue tongue" skink. : D
